Our experience: route and expenses of the trip through Belgium with children

Summary of our trip to Belgium with children

Our family trip was 15 days in late July and early August. A trip to Belgium in a motorhome that we really enjoyed as a family

Starting on the southern coast of Belgium, in De Panne, and going through the Flanders and Brussels region until reaching the province of Limburg, close to the Netherlands and Germany.

Without a doubt, an ideal route mounted to enjoy our children and us. It was a route where we combined Beaches, fairytale cities and towns, unique bike routes in the world between water and trees, castles and multiple activities to discover Belgium beyond the typical tourist.

Expenses of the 15-day route through Belgium with children

In total, this trip that we have made for 15 days through Belgium has had a cost of 2500 € uros, Cost for all 4 that we are in the family during the 15 days.

First of all when we go in our car we contemplate 800 euros of cost of gasoline and tolls to go and return to Barcelona and move on this route through Belgium

Then we add the visits and tickets to the different places visited. A cost that has been 566€. Then spending on restaurants and hotels for € 766.6. And finally, we have expenses for souvenirs and supermarkets of about € 300.

Likewise, remember that we go in our motorhome and pay for camping sites and motorhome areas to sleep, if you go in hotels perhaps this part increases the cost of this section a little.

Belgium what to see with children in 15 essential plans

We are going to tell you about our 15 essential destinations if you travel to Belgium with children. 15 places considered after our 15 day trip.

Therefore, you will see that these places are arranged in chronological order and by visit during our route to help you in your travel planning. Starting in the southwest and ending in the northeast of Belgium.

Finally remember to do click on SEE each of the destinations and you will discover what to see and do in that destination and some tips or advice that will help you on your trip to Belgium as a family.

1 Visit the amusement park of the Maya the Bee in Plopsaland

What a great discovery this amusement park! You won't believe it, but this park is super pretty and has become one of our favorite amusement parks in Europe.

If you go with children to Belgium, your visit is a must. Magic and adrenaline await you!

2 See seals on the beach and meet Ensor in Ostend

Ostend with children is great. My children loved it and not only for bathing on their beach, which for them is already a great plan.

Right next to where you swim on the beach, there is a seal beach! yes of seals in total freedom. We really enjoyed watching them swim and play in the sand.

Besides Ostend, we were surprised by the James Ensor house museum. A museum with an audio guide in Spanish especially for children. Our children were overshadowed by the history and work of this Flemish painter of a thousand masks. 100% recommendable

3 Bruges with children: Historium, route through the mills to Damme and boat trip through the canals. Of course between chocolates and waffles

Bruges would be recommended yes or yes to anyone on earth. It couldn't be less with the children. Bruges Belgium with children is a city full of attractions and educational and fun activities for them.

To enjoy Bruges with children, make sure to go to the Historium yes or yes, take a boat ride through its canals, and finally take a bike route along the greenway at the foot of the canal that connects Bruges with the small town of Damme, where you will enjoy the bike, the landscape, the boats and some very cool mills. You can visit one inside.

To all this do not forget the waffles and chocolates during the snacks and if you want to see more activities click on More information.

4 Ghent with Children: Boat Trip, Castle of the Counts of Flanders and Dragon's Belfort Tower

Ghent with children is welcoming in all respects. At the restaurant level, here my children ate the best Belgian fries and also the best Kindergartens in Belgium. A kindergarten is ice cream for children. You can order it in most bars and restaurants and they always surprise you and the kids.

You cannot leave Ghent with children without first taking a boat ride through its two rivers and canals or renting a kayak and exploring them like that. Without a doubt the best plan with children in Ghent.

But secondly, it would be a crime not to visit the Castle of the Counts of Flanders in Ghent with children. An impressive medieval stone castle, straight out of a tale. Imagination flies there. Of course, advice if your son is under 10 years old I would not let him listen to the audio guide (the softest thing he says is copulate and slaughter, I'll leave it there).

Finally, we recommend you go up to the Belfort Tower, to the municipal bell tower with its Dragon in command. You can practically go up in an elevator and the views will delight adults and adults.

5 Gaasbeek, a fairy tale castle

Like a fairytale castle, Gaasbeek stands close to the town of Lennik, 15 minutes from Brussels. This fairytale castle was a success for our children.

From Lennik you can do a 6 km bike route to the castle, and a cool route and the visit to the castle is worth it. Its gardens with lakes full of ducks and birds are beautiful. And its interior still retains its essence of romanticism.

6 Beersel, a medieval castle near Brussels

Another castle, but this one of medieval battles and worthy of a Robin Hood.

Beersel loved the kids because of the steps up and down, sometimes a bit uncomfortable for parents. It must also be said that the blackberries around the water moat also gave points to our unstoppable little ones liking the castle. How they ate blackberries that afternoon ...

7 Brussels: Mini Europe, Japanese palaces and the European Parliament

OBrussels with children is not boring. And there are a thousand family plans. We recommend 3 mainly.

First, you cannot leave Brussels with children without visiting Mini Europe. It is like Europe in miniature, with interactions and a very educational visit for children. We liked it a lot because at all times the landscape of the Atomium in Brussels was impressive around it.

Next and to finish off the educational part of the visit to Brussels with children, we recommend you visit the European Parliament with them. Apart from learning, they will like to know the place of the top dogs in Europe.

And finally, take a walk through the Brussels Lake Park and reach the Chinese Palace and the Japanese Tower. For them it will be like going to Asia, they will love it.

8 Lake Rotselaar: bathing, canoeing and cycling route

Not far from Brussels and very close to Leuven, we find a Belgian inland lake and beach. If you do your summer holidays in Belgium with children, a good dip in this lake beach will be great.

In addition, Lake Rotselaar has a windsurfing school, canoe and kayak rental, and many bike routes. All together with a large playground and a good restaurant bar.

9 Leuven: route of the abbeys, water games and more

Leuven is the quintessential Belgian beer and university city. Leuven with children at first glance may seem not very attractive. Instead, our kids loved it. First of all, they loved the bike ride through the 4 brewery abbeys. A very cool route full of stops along the way. We stopped at the university campus with the Arenberg castle in the center, then at the Grand Beatarium, a UNESCO world heritage site, at different abbeys having a drink there, at the Leuven botanical garden, the oldest in Belgium and finally in the area. north of the port where they had a blast in a super fun water play area.

In addition, right in front of the water games area, the parents refresh ourselves with good beer in the place where the first Estella Artois was born.

10 Alden Biesen, a very large castle

Children love to get lost in the castles, their gardens and feel like princes, princesses and Robin Hoods. So much so that castles are never lacking on our trips. They are all learning for their stories and fun for them.

Alden Biesen is not only one of the biggest castles in Belgium, it is also a great place to visit Belgium with children as it always has some activity or event for children.

11 Bike route through the water

This plan should be a MUST of any visit to Belgium with children without a doubt. Bokrijk with children is a must for every Belgian, no wonder that for the traveler it should also be.

It is in the province of Limburg and not only do you have this unique bike route in the world between two waters, but you also have much more to see of Belgium with children. An example: a route of almost 2 km seeing farm animals with totally free access between a large lake with a picnic area.

And also, keep reading number 12, because Bokrijk has something that you are going to love on your trip to Belgium with children.

12 The great open-air museum of Belgian folklore

If you liked Bokrijk, Limburg on plan number 11, you will like it more now. Because Bokrijk has a great open-air museum of Belgian folklore ideal for children. There is no Belgian who has not visited this museum. And no wonder. It is a museum with actors who represent Belgian life throughout history and which also includes a treasure hunt for 11 elements from a painting by Brueguel.

And if that wasn't enough, here the little ones will have a great time with workshops, traditional games, farm animals and playgrounds. A MUST from Belgium with children.

13 Path above the trees

And if you liked the bike route of number 11 because it is unique and spectacular, this will excite you.

In the heart of Bosland, a large Belgian natural park in the Limburg province, you will find more than 400 km of bike routes and something very special. A route that will take you for a walk above the trees! As you hear! You can do it by bike, walking or like we did on a skateboard. The paradise of bikes without a doubt.

And if you want more Bosland with children you will love it. There you will find super cool playgrounds in the middle of the forest and very close you can enjoy Aqua Mundo, an impressive aquatic space for children.

14 Mechelen the city of children and families

If you go to Belgium with children, you cannot forget Mechelen. The city of families and children. Everything is designed for them. Children's playgrounds with dream water areas, boat rides ... And much more!

15 Antwerp with children, museum of chocolate and art

Antwerp, the second largest city in Belgium. The city of chocolate and excellent activities to do with children. Going around Antwerp by boat or horse carriage is a must if you go with children.

Also don't forget the chocolate museum or the Rubens house museum.
