French Brittany to see: magical and historical lands of France

Brittany (France), is without a doubt the land of legends, stories and magic. Without a doubt, it is one of the regions with the most history and one of the most beautiful in France.

But, above all, it is a region where you can breathe mysticism, harmony, beauty, tranquility and nature. Today it combines this peace with high tourism, since its appearance makes it one of the regions of more character of France.

Una mystical and medieval region perfect to visit for at least a week.

Traveling to French Brittany by motorhome: villages of the French Brittany for a 10-day route.

Our experience of 2 trips to French Brittany by motorhome

Next, we are going to propose to you, the route that we have done in 10 days, for the Brittany of France.

It was our last trip of 2019 and the first of 2020. 10 days after Christmas and accompanied by another family friend, the @xirivica.

This was not our first trip to Brittany, France. Just a year ago we made Normandy and part of Brittany. From that first trip, we repeated points like the one in the Broceliande forest, the Merlin forest. And we would have repeated if we had time Mont-Saint-Michel, for its spectacular nature, and Fougeres, a small medieval village that we loved. And if it were summer, in addition, we would have repeated to some small town with a good beach Gulf of Morbihan.

Of these two trips we have only stopped seeing the Pink granite coast, in which we have been very close and the occasional city like Rennes, Brest or VannesQuite large cities that we run away from in general.

On this route we have started with our motorhome from a small town in Barcelona, Sant Pere de Vilamajor. Both in the outward and in the return we have made a stop to spend the night and not make the trip so hard for our kids.

How to get to French Brittany

Get by car or motorhome even French Brittany is not complicated. Are 10 hours drive from Barcelona, like going to Andalusia.

You can also go in Plane to Rennes or Nantes and take a rental car.

You can even get there by train making change in Toulouse. Being about 17 hours of travel.

Expenses of the 10-day route through French Brittany by motorhome

In total, this trip that we have made in a motorhome has had 1000 € uros of cost for the 4 that we are in the family.

About 600 euros have been spent on gasoline and tolls, the most expensive of the trip without a doubt.  The rest, have been costs in restoration, visits and overnight areas for motorhomes, apart from a small souvenir.

In general, spending 10 days in French Brittany in a motorhome, as we have been, was not expensive. The restoration in general is quite cheap thanks to les Formules, the Menus du Midi and the crepes. On average per person they were 10 to 12 € eat.

On the other hand in visits and tickets we have spent for the 4 of us for the 10 days 98€. Not too much, since in French Brittany most interesting things to see are free and more if you go in winter.

When going by motorhome, hotels have not paid. In addition, as there are many motorhome areas, the costs at campsites have decreased a lot. There are many free motorhome areas and those that are not paid are less than € 10 24 hours. Total We have spent 44 € uros to sleep throughout the trip.

Now, if you don't have a motorhome and you want to rent one, add about € 50 per day if you rent it in France or € 100 per day if you rent it in Spain.

Documentation you must bring for your trip to Alsace at Christmas

To go to France, you must have the valid DNIs or passports of adults and also children as identification documentation.

You must also bring your Covid vaccination certificate or QR code or a PCR or negative antigen test for those over 12 years of age. They can not only ask you for this at the border, but they can ask you for it in many restaurants, museums and other places of interest.

On the other hand for medical issues you must take the European sanitary card in force, although you should know that in France there is a medical copayment for foreigners in most things. For this reason, and due to various experiences of colleagues, we decided to always carry a medical travel insurance that for the cost that it has we go safe and calm. We always take out Iati getaway insurance, which is designed to travel as a family in a motorhome or camper, which apart from medical insurance includes even accident insurance for the pets with which you travel or even a small insurance for theft of the interior of the motorhome. For the price it is really worth it and more with the Covid still around here. Without commitment we leave you here a discount of 5% of the insurance What do we tell you in case you want to ask for a budget at a better price.

Where to eat in French Brittany

Typical gastronomy of French Brittany that you cannot miss

Gastronomy is always a key factor for any traveler, right? So we don't forget her on any trip. And even less being in France.

In Brittany there are typical products that you should not forget to try. Fish and seafood is the big star. Prawns and lobsters from Finistère, scallops and cuttlefish in Saint-Brieuc and Saint-Malo, spider crabs in Paimpol, sea oxen in Morlaix, but also clams, clams, horns and periwinkles. And within these products, we must certainly highlight two top stars, oysters and mussels.

And if you wonder about the great star dish that Brittany identifies with, it is undoubtedly crêpes and galette. Basically they differ by the content of their dough, since crêpes, like pancakes, are made with white wheat flour, galettes are black wheat cakes (buckwheat). In addition, these are eaten stuffed with salty products such as sausage, vegetables or cheeses, while the crêpe is eaten at dessert time.

And finally keep in mind that you have to try the  kouign amann, literally "butter cake" in Breton. It is not necessary to detail the recipe, only that you know that it is a must if you travel to the Breton country and that salted butter is the star of this delicacy.

And to accompany all this, do not forget a good local cider, its beers or its particular liquor, sung in many Breton songs, the chouchenn, a traditional alcoholic drink obtained from the fermentation of honey in apple juice .

Restaurants in French Brittany, any advice

We recommend you get carried away through the streets of Breton cities and towns and go to any of the restaurants. There are more expensive and cheaper, of all kinds.

What we advise you is to ask for the lunch menu or the dish of the day. And remember that if you want to save something, ask for tap water ("a cagaf do", as I write it as it is pronounced).

Complete guide to travel to France by motorhome

France by motorhome: Regulations and culture of motorhome

Traveling in France in a motorhome is the easiest. Without a doubt, the motorhome routes in France are among the best in Europe.

Regulations on parking and spending the night in a motorhome in France freely

The regulations in France regulate that you can park and spend the night anywhere that a vehicle can do it, as long as it is not camped (you leave the perimeter of your vehicle, that is, take out tables, chairs, etc.), as in Spain although with particularities, which we will see later. This is the general rule, you can park and stay overnight without problem if there is no explicit prohibition.

Regulations on camping in a motorhome in France

Camping in France is meticulously regulated in various ways depending on the region and site.

Now as a general rule Free camping (taking out table chairs, opening windows, awning ...) is prohibited throughout France in these places:

  • By the sea
  • In natural parks or protected environmental areas
  • In the streets and public roads
  • Less than 500 meters from a tourist attraction
  • On private farms without permission

Outside of these sites, you have to look at each case about the region we are in and place, a normative tidal wave.

But as a general rule, outside of the sites mentioned above, if there is no prohibition, we could take out our awning, table and chair to eat without problem.
Another important thing to know is that the French motorhome culture is of great respect and education, which means that no one thinks of leaving their table and chair and awning anywhere all day. They only do it at the time of use and then they collect everything quickly. You must always do this as well, so that free camping is still tolerated in France outside of the sites we have mentioned above.

Motorhome services and areas in France

France by motorhome is very easy since has the largest network of motorhome areas in Europe with more than 6000 motorhome areas. Motorhome areas with all the services of emptying and filling with water and many with electricity.

Most of the overnight areas for motorhomes or campers are municipal and free or at very low prices, less than € 10 for 24 hours.

In practically all points of interest or tourist towns you will find a motorhome area, and generally always central or well connected to the center of the towns.

The French have a PhD in camping and caravanning and it shows.

In addition to these motorhome areas, we find a network of overnight areas in very important farms and vineyards where they allow to spend the night and camp in exchange for the purchase of km0, this network is what makes France Passion.

Carreteras

In general the roads are very good in France. The national ones usually have a hard shoulder and are usually fine, although depending on the area you will find many changes in grade, curves and a lot of two-way traffic.

The highways are great, but against the extortionate prices. In some sections there are highways, however they are minimal.

Finally, you should know that between November 1 to March 31 in 48 departments of France, including those bordering Spain, it is mandatory to carry chains (at least for the two driving wheels) or winter tires.

If you want to see an article about what chains and / or winter tires are better for motorhomes, here We leave you an article that we talk about from our experience in our motorhome.
