Discover Slovenia by motorhome, with the help of the great family instagramer @ 4_enautocaravana. A trip that will make you fall in love through the story of a trip to the great emerald green country of Europe.

Without a doubt this Catalan family of 4 are one of our favorite instagramers in the world of caravanning and campering. His publications add value to the world of motorhome and camper and help inspire us to plan and decide next routes. For me they are one of those instagramers that without a doubt add value with their publications, so don't hesitate to follow them! What are you waiting for?

They are a family of 4 who love to travel, especially traveling by motorhome. 12 years ago, still being a family of 2, they were curious about the world of motorhomes but they didn't decide to try it until a few years later. Then, with their 4-year-old little one, they began to travel in a motorhome and until today they have not stopped. Traveling by motorhome has opened up a world of possibilities that they never imagined. They love to travel with their little house in tow and the only thing they regret is not having discovered it sooner!

And today this adventurous and traveling family are going to tell us about a great trip to a great destination and route by camper: Slovenia by motorhome.

Slovenia is without a doubt one of the most incredible countries that we have visited with our snail house. For those who do not place it, it is a one small republic of the European Union located between Italy, Croatia, Austria and Hungary

After the ten day war became independent from the former Yugoslavia in June 1991 and at that time, it was already the most developed country of that federation and culturally it has always been closer to Italy, Austria and Germany than to the Balkan countries.

En 2016 was declared the first green country in the world by the Global Green Destinations Conference for meeting 96% of its standards. The respect that its population has for nature together with its environmental policies that different political groups agreed more than 30 years ago have made this country a fantastic place to enjoy nature in its purest form, and also, for those who travel with young children, without the need to take many hours of walks.

Practical guide to Slovenia by motorhome

Coin: the € uro

Language: Slovenian, although the level of English that the majority of the population has is high and in the coastal area many speak Italian.

Overnight in motorhome: Free overnight stay in motorhome (AC) or camper is not allowed anywhere, and he is pursued by the police at risk of being fined for it. It must be done in campsites, areas or spaces specifically enabled as established by the country's law. Like the Netherlands, Switzerland, Corsica and recently Portugal, you can only spend the night in Slovenia in a motorhome within the authorized places.

Tolls: To circulate around the freeway you have to buy one bullet point (It is equivalent to paying the tolls all at once). There are 1-week, 1-month and 1-year vignettes that can be purchased at gas stations, kiosks or at gas stations and tolls prior to entering the country. Note that there are few highways and that it is necessary to assess whether it is worth it or to travel on secondary roads. In our case, of the 3 weeks that we were doing the route, we only bought one of 1 week to travel to the south (in 2019 it was € 15 for 1 week in a class 2 vehicle), the rest it was better for us to do everything on secondary roads so It did not pay us to buy the one for 1 month.

Our trip to Slovenia by motorhome in figures

duration: 22 days

Distance: 4048 km

Driving time: 70h and 13 min

What to see in Slovenia by motorhome: 22 destinations for 22 days

KOBARID

The most remarkable thing is the Kozjak waterfall (Although it is not the most impressive you can see in the country and they are certainly very busy).

The way up begins just outside the campsite and in about 60 -70 minutes you will arrive at the waterfall.

Halfway there are some trenches of the First War World that are well preserved half hidden among the vegetation. And you will also meet a suspension bridge that crosses the Soka river.

A space that we found spectacular to relax and feel the bravery of the Soca river is a corner by the road called Otona (GPS 46.274070, 13.570419), there is a space set aside on the side of the road for parking.

From there a path begins from which you soon turn left to continue along a path full of stones and below some 400 stairs that take you to the river Soca. Really very highly recommended sit there for a while.

Just before arriving at the Koren Camp campsite (about 700m from the village of Kobarid) you will cross the napoleon bridge. And another visit that you can make is that of museum to the Planika dairy cheese factory (Although we can not comment because we do not visit it, they do not open until 10am).

Overnight Kovarid in motorhome:

Camping Koren Camp

BOVEC

You can leave the vehicle next to a hotel there (GPS 46.315793, 13,494260) and walk about 20 min to the viewpoint of the boka waterfall which has a waterfall of 106m.

If you want to climb to the top, the walk becomes longer and more complicated for children.

At Bovec Sports Center (at the entrance of the town) there is a motorhome area in the same parking lot. You can hire here a Canoeing or rafting down the Soca, or a circuit through the trees with zip lines and hanging bridges...

Bovec overnight in motorhome:

PLUZNA

Very small mountain town where the Virje waterfalls. There is a parking 500m from the waterfalls that we only recommend for cars or small campers. For large motorhomes, it is better to park it where you can in the small town and walk 10 more minutes to the waterfall.

Pluzna (cascades de Virje). Slovenia by motorhome

VRSIC STEP

This is the highest port in Slovenia. The ascent and descent of this pass are 9km with a slope of 14% and with 50 curves of 180º that are in charge of counting them with some posters.

At the top you will have Spectacular views of the Julian Alps at 1611 m altitude (so better take a sweater).

Going down in the direction of Kransja Gora you will find a wooden chapel surrounded by forest, the Ruska Kapelica (GPS 46.442849, 13.768916) with a parking lot right in front.

KRANSJA GORA

Highlight the lake jasna (You will see it marked as Jezero Jasna in Slovenian). They are really two artificial lakes connected to each other, at the confluence of the Velika and Male rivers. With bathing and beach areas, although the water is very very cold.

Overnight Kransja Gora in motorhome:

Spik campsite (very nice and clean, good playground and grass pitches, although with few showers) about 2km from Lake Jasna (there is a bike path there).

ZALENCI

5 min from Kranjska Gora by motorhome we reached a rnatural reserve near Ratece where there is the Lake Zalenci, which is considered the official source of the Sava Dolinka river.

If you look closely, you can see small bubbles that come out of the bottom of the lake, which is the underground water that is emerging. The water remains constant throughout the year at 5-6ºC and bathing in it is not allowed.

PLAN

Here we recommend you get to Planica ski jumping slopes at the Nordijski Center Planica.

We were entertained for a long time watching some training sessions, the truth is that it was a real show for all four of us.

PERICNIK

There is a small parking lot right where the path to the Pericnik waterfall where they charged € 3 in 2019 for 2h (enough time for the visit).

But the track to get there is somewhat narrow and there is a lot of up and down traffic, so if the motorhome is large, we recommend you park a couple of kilometers before on the side of the road and finish arriving on foot.

This is one of the waterfalls that you cannot miss. It is impressive to walk behind the 56m waterfall (we recommend wearing a raincoat or similar).

bled

El lake bled It is typical of Slovenia that appears in any travel catalog (and consequently is very crowded) but it is not by far the most beautiful.

If you have time, it is fine to dedicate a day (or a half) but if you have not been there for many days it is something that we consider dispensable.

You can bathe in the lake (there are different beaches enabled around), surround it in bike, arrive in boat to church of our lady of the island or visit the center of the old town and the castle

There is also the Straza Bled recreation area with a mountain slide (like the rodelbann from Germany) and other jumping attractions for young and old to have a good time.

And for the children at the entrance to Bled is dinopark, a dinosaur park with life-size statues scattered among the trees. We felt that it was not very cared for and that for what it costs, it is not worth it to adults, although it is true that children were delighted with it.

Overnight Bled in motorhome:

Camping de Bled (in August only if you have a reservation but don't even try); Sobec camping; AC area of Mercator supermarket (GPS 46.3703, 14.1185) with water and electricity about 1,5 km from the lake.

VINTGAR

Arriving at Vintgar gorges There is a free parking (parking 2) marked for motorhomes and campers 5 minutes walk from parking 1 that is paid (€ 5 and overnight is not allowed).

It's a journey of approximately 1,5h between round trip where the gorge is traced to a small waterfall.

LJUBLJANA

La capital of the country.

We recommend the visit to the castle to which you can climb with funicular or on foot, and where is the puppet museum, highly recommended.

We spent a few hours visiting The House of experiments (ustanova Hise Experimentov) with more than 60 experiments to do and in which the children really enjoyed.

El metelkova neighborhood, is a concentrated sample of urban art.

A curious place is the Museum of Illusion where between optical effects and brain teasers they have a good time.

And the Tivoli park It is an ideal place for a stop, a picnic or a game time for the little ones in the family.

We also found the Museum of Natural History, but that with children is usually always playing.

Overnight Ljubljana in motorhome:

Camping Ljubljana, has a bus stop just 150m away that takes you right to the city center (line 6 or 11) in 15-20 min. Ljubljana is a city that invites you to walk, its triple bridge, the bridge of the butchers, the bridge of dragons (symbol of the city), the market, the Preseren square where they say it always rains (less when we went because it was in plays)…

RADOMLJE

Radomlje is where we find the Arboretum Volcji Potok, a huge park, with an area dedicated to sculptures of cetaceans, of dinosaurs that move, with a fantastic children's play area, a greenhouse with butterflies and many gardens.

VELIKA FLAT

The typical excuse is go up to Velika Planina by funicular and chair lifts (or funicular and on foot) and once at the top walk to the village of shepherds made from home in a way traditional amidst the Julian Alps.

Velika Planina overnight in motorhome:

Camping Kamp Alpe, at the foot of the Velika Planina funicular. It has very few plots and the services are very austere. The reception is the same place where they sell the tickets for the funicular.

UNDERMINE

Un MUST that you cannot miss to enjoy the charm of the Julian Alps is Panoramic Route of Solcava.

In which through different farms, each with its craft specialty, a tour of the area is made.

You can take the opportunity to buy some of their products (natural energy bars, cheese, sweets ...).

Solcava overnight in motorhome:

Camping Kamp Smica, in Luce.

LOGARSKA DOLINA (LOGAR VALLEY).

At the entrance of the Logar Valley there is a toll for motor vehicles because it is a protected area with 7km of road that crosses the valley.

At the end of which is the Rinka waterfall (15-20 min walk from the parking lot to the base of the waterfall, and 1h more if you want to climb to the top).

In the same valley, next to the Penzion Na Razpotju, there is the Pravljicni Gozd (forest of stories). A walk through the forest with a curious journey through 21 traditional tales (mostly Slovenian) through figures carved in wood or houses made of logs.

CATEZ OF SAVI

In Slovenia there are many water parks created around hot springs. It is something relatively typical in the country.

We decided on him Terme Catez in Catez of Savi but there is a great variety of them. In this case, the entrance to the campsite includes the entrance to the thermal water park where the water in the different outdoor pools ranges between 28 and 34ºC.

Overnight Catez of Savi in motorhome:

Camping Terme Catez.

POSTOJNA

All the Postojna Caves They are one of the best known, and therefore one of the most touristy.

We recommend you buy the online tickets, combined with Predjama Castle, even if it is the day before and take them downloaded to your mobile. This saved us quite a bit of queue.

The visit begins with a train ride, in macrogroups and ends with a walking tour en masse, our feeling is a bit of going like sheep. You are allowed to take photos and despite wearing a sweater and long pants, we end the visit with a certain feeling of freshness, so we recommend you go with something warm.

At the end of the visit you will see some copies of Proteus anguinus (human fish) living alone in Slovenian caves without eyes or skin pigmentation. A curious animal. You will also see it and discover more about it if you visit the vivarium, which you can complement with a visit to the karst cave exhibition and the butterfly exhibition. In our opinion, the three expendable.

Postojna overnight in motorhome:

Postojna AC area a few minutes walk from the Caves.

PREDJAMA

From the Postojna Caves to the Predjama Castle, if you have the ticket already bought you can take a free bus which will take you in 20 min.

It can be reached by motorhome but there is not much space to park, at least large vehicles.

This castle built into the rocky wall of a cave is spectacular, and the visit with an audio guide in Spanish is highly interesting, including for children. Highly recommended.

SKOCJAN

All the Skocjan Caves we liked them much more than the ones in Postojna.

We make the visit at 17:XNUMX p.m., the last in the afternoon, but what the guide tells us is the one that usually has fewer people.

The group is very large but they divide us into English or Italian, we do not speak Italian but as the group is very very small we decided to try our luck and see what happens. And the truth is that due to the similarity to Catalan and Spanish, it is very easy to follow, even for children.

These caves are much larger and more imposing. The entire route is on foot and there are areas where you can see the underground river in the background.

It is less illuminated and photos cannot be taken inside. The feeling is that of being in a much more authentic and impressive place. If you are only going to be able to see some, keep these.

PORTOROZ, PIRAN AND IZOLA, THE SLOVENIAN COAST

Slovenia is only a few kilometers from coastline, the beaches are not sand but stone in the best of cases or directly concrete.

Among them are these three peoples. Portoroz very very touristy and commercial.

Piran The entrance is forbidden to vehicles, you have to park in some parking lots at the entrance but all of them with a height limitation of 2m. We could not visit it, although from the photos it has a mini-square of San Marcos like the one in Venice.

Izola It is a beautiful picturesque town, with its church and bell tower reminiscent of those of Italian cities and with a walk along the beach where you can cool off.

DIRECT

Where will you find the Mining museum of the Mercury mine Antonijev Rov, the only mine in the world where there is mercury in a liquid state.

You can complete the excursion with a visit to the Topilnica Hg mercury smelter where there is an interactive museum to learn more about mercury. We do not visit it.

Another charming corner of this town is its Divje lake (Divje Jezero or called Wild Lake in English). It is a small artificial turquoise lake where the famous proteus lives in the deepest area.

Overnight in Idrija in a motorhome:

There is a private area with 3 parking spaces (on the land of the owner's house GPS 45.9987, 14.0258) that looks very good, and the owner is also one of the mine guides. But we arrived too late at night and we slept without any problem in the Mercator supermarket parking lot on arrival in town.

BOHINJ

El bohinj lake It is a site that depending on which side you visit, you get one impression or another.

La most tourist area and commercial, where there is a Zlatarog on top of a rock welcoming the visitor and that you meet when you arrive, it is full of people bathing and walking.

In return the opposite side looks like a little piece of heaven on earth. We recommend the fairy trail that begins after the Zlatarog campsite and in which you will find different panels with fantastic characters from Slovenian stories and legends and with stamps of the characters that we believe should allow you to stamp some type of notebook or passport that they owe you to ease.

Through this small path you reach the lake, on a river beach of white pebbles with impressive turquoise water surrounded by the Julian Alps.

You can go up well in a motorhome to the paid parking of the Savica waterfall (GPS 46.288823, 13.801744) along a not excessively narrow asphalt road that rises from in front of the Zlatarog campsite.

From the parking lot there is a path with about 500 steps that takes you quickly to the 78m high waterfall.

About 15min from the waterfall and a mere 7-8 min walk from the Zlatarog campsite there is the tEleférico of the Vogel ski slopes (here the parking is free) which are located at an altitude of 1537m, and the same ticket allows you to go up later in chairlift to Orlova Glava (at 1682m altitude).

The views of Lake Bohinj from above are spectacular although we could not enjoy them much because of the thick fog that day.

There are also a multitude of hiking trails for all levels.

Overnight Bohinj in motorhome:

Camping Zlatarog on the shore of the lake (it fills up very quickly, it is difficult to find a place); Bohinj AC area with water exchange and electricity although somewhat removed from the lake.

TOLMIN

The road from Bohinj to Tolmin is a very narrow road and somewhat uncomfortable for motorhomes, although we did it.

To visit  Tolmin gorges by motorhome you have to park in parking 2 which is about 2km from the entrance of the gorge trail.

You cannot get to parking 1 by motorhome, but there are transfer vans every few minutes that take you up to the throat for free.

The route is about 3km and in our opinion, they are not as spectacular as those of Vintgar.

    Great the route!
Would it be too much trouble to ask for the approximate budget of this trip? We are considering making our first trip in AC, opening with Slovenia but we need to know better the budget that it may cost us.

    Thank you!

    1. Kucavanera family

Good Nacho, because in the first place it depends if you rent or is your motorhome. It also depends on the things you want to do there, tickets and restaurants can take a good bit of the budget. Another thing to consider is that the overnight stay is not free, it is prohibited, so normally you have to pay for camping or private area in most cases. Budgets are very variable, it depends on each one a little 🙂

  5. Jose Manuel

Good family. Would you recommend me to take the motorcycle or is it not necessary? I tell you because I do not have a motorcycle license and in Slovenia if they ask for it, if it was interesting to take it then I would play it. There are a lot of police on the roads? Thank you, a greeting

    1. Kucavanera family

Good Jose Manuel, motorcycles always help to avoid uncomfortable situations on narrow roads, but as you can see in the trip that is explained, he did not take a motorcycle and nothing happened. In the end, it is to adapt 🙂

  6. Francisco Manuel

Hi there. Is there a road that you could not access by going in a caravan?

    1. Kucavanera family

According to the measurements, if they are the same as the motorhome, you should not have a problem

    2. 4 in motorhome

That we couldn't access, no, but the Solcava panoramic road at that time was not very well indicated (I don't know how it will be now) and we took the wrong road (which ended up being a path). We had a lot of trouble there...

Good afternoon, I would like to know if, when going in August 2023, do you think we will have problems staying overnight in the campsites without a reservation, since we do not know the exact days of arrival in Slovenia, since we will go through the Alps instead of the Côte d'Azur. All the best

    1. Kucavanera family

It's hard to get wet in something like that. Currently, August, wherever it is, can be difficult anywhere, comrades. If you want to be safe, it is always better to book 😉
