About @viajoconmiautocaravana

We are Franc and Tere.

We love traveling in our motorhome. We usually make three trips a year (Easter, summer and Christmas) and getaways on bridges and weekends whenever we can.

Lately we go to the mountains a lot, but we also like to visit towns, cities, beaches, museums, monuments ...

10 years ago we decided to try what it was to travel with the house in tow and we rented a Marco Polo for a four-day long weekend We were hooked!  We bought a California that we had two years old, the next step was a large volume camper that we also had two years old and we currently have a small motorhome that is perfect for the two of us.

We really like to do installations, little DIYs and improvements in our AC to enjoy all the comforts and feel at home in it.

Traveling in Slovenia by camper or motorhome: everything you need to know before leaving

Regulations on overnight stays and camping in Slovenia

When traveling through Slovenia by motorhome you should know that in this country Free camping is not allowed.

In many car parks there are even signs forbidden to park motorhomes from 22 pm to 7 am.

We when we travel to countries where free camping is not allowed We prefer to sleep in campsites or in areas set up for the night. For safety and to save us a good fine.

Services for motorhomes and campers

There are quite a few campsites and overnight areas in Slovenia. In all the ones we have been to (except one area in Ljubljana) they have a service to empty and fill water.

Campsites do not usually have delimited plots as we are used to in Spain and they all have grass.

And those in the most touristy places have beautiful and super fun children's areas for the little ones.

Roads and tolls in Slovenia

All the main roads they are fine, but in the mountain ones You can find sections with asphalt in poor condition and if you add to that the curves and that they are not very wide, you see that in Slovenia you have to drive at low speed.

To circulate by highway it is necessary to buy a vignette and paste it on the glass of the motorhome. There are bullets for a week, a month and a year.

The weekly vignette costs €15 and can be purchased at gas stations, post offices and some kiosks.

We only traveled one day on the highway to save a few kilometers and some time. We buy a weekly vignette at a post office.

The best and worst of our route through Slovenia by motorhome

What we liked the most

  • Little overcrowding (keep in mind that we went in July, not August)
  • Lots of nature
  • Kindness of the people
  • Easy to find places to spend the night
  • Prices very similar to Spain
  • Very clean and well-kept towns and cities

What we liked the least

The only thing that we did not like about Slovenia is that not even in the most touristy places have we found guides, explanations no brochures in spanish. But I think that here we have to ask ourselves: are there guides in Slovenian in the tourist places in Spain?

Discover with us ... the 25 (+1) best places in Slovenia!

01 | TOLMINSKA KORITA (TOLMIN THROAT)

You can park your motorhome in parking 2 and there is a free bus to the entrance.

Ticket price: € 10

Overnight:

Kamp Ruth (Kobarid)

A nice simple campsite, but with all the services.

Lots of grass, soccer field and children's area.

If you go, be careful with the GPS indications. He indicated us by a very narrow path, it is not this. You have to get to Kobarid and turn right, there are signs.

Price: € 20 / night (motorhome + 2 adults)

02 | KOZJAC WATERFALL

We found a charming place.

The journey to the waterfall is very easy. At the beginning you will see the Soca river with its impressive water and then you will enter a path in the forest with the stones covered with moss where the green color is the protagonist. In total about 6 km.

It is very nice when you get to the waterfall to see the light that passes through a crack in the rock.

Ticket price: € 5

03 | BOKA WATERFALL

It is one of the highest waterfalls in Slovenia. It has a lot of water and you can see it from the road that connects Bovec with Zaga.

We parked the motorhome in a parking lot right next to a hotel and walked up to a viewpoint in about 15 minutes. There is quite a slope, but it is a short section with a lot of shade.

04 | VIRJE WATERFALL

We parked the car in the golf course from Bovec (€5). There is a small bar and a nice terrace to have a drink after visiting the waterfall.

It is not one of the most visited in Slovenia. There is a nice journey to get to Virje.

05 | VRSIC STEP

Panoramic road with 50 180° bends and very narrow. It is worth making several stops along the way. It is the highest mountain pass in Slovenia.

06 | KRANSJSKA GORA

07 | PLANICA VALLEY / NADIZA WATERFALL

Nice, very easy excursion through the Planica Valley in the Triglav Natural Park. At the beginning of the route you can see ski jumping trampolines largest in Europe.

The refuge can be reached without any difficulty, there are people who go up on bicycles and in 20 more minutes you will arrive at the Nadiza Waterfall. In total approximately 9 kilometers

08 | ZELENCI NATURAL RESERVE

A spectacular place with many fauna and flora, but the most impressive is the emerald green lake at the end of the tour.

The water emerges from the lake itself and you can see the bubbles due to its transparency.

You can park the car right at the beginning of the route. There are only about 200 m. from the parking lot to the lake.

09 | PERICNIK WATERFALL

One of the highest waterfalls in Slovenia. Its peculiarity is that you can walk behind her.

We went with the motorcycle until the beginning of the route. I think I remember that the road was quite narrow, but when we got to the car park there was a motorhome

10 | MARTULJEk WATERFALL

We start the journey to the waterfall at the Spik campsite. The start is like a botanical trail where you see signs with the names of the plants.

It is a nice tour through the Zgornjesavska Valley with quite a difference in altitude.

We ate in the PriIngotu hut with spectacular views.

11 | LAKE JASNA

Two artificial lakes very close to the highway. It is nice to take a walk around the lake and have a drink on one of its terraces at sunset.

12 | VINTGAR THROAT

The route through the gorge is done through walkways and bridges and some flight of stairs.

If you go from Kransjska Gora without taking the highway, you will see that there is a “no motorhomes” sign. You can pass without problem and park your car in the parking lot. Of course, we recommend going very early because the parking lot fills up and that is when they do not let you pass.

Entry price: € 10

Parking price: €10

13 | bled

The circular loop around the lake is a nice walk of about 9 km and we spent an entire afternoon making several stops to bathe in the lake.

You can bathe in the designated places or you can look for a corner among the trees where you can take a dip completely alone.

It is recommended to go up to the Ojstrika viewpoint to have spectacular views of Lake Bled.

Overnight:

Bled motorhome areas.

A quiet place to spend a night with emptying, filling and electricity services. Next to a SPAR supermarket, perfect for filling the pantry.

Price: €25/night

14 | LAKE BOHINJ

For us one of the most beautiful places in Slovenia. It is a glacial valley very visited for sports activities (hiking trails, kayaking, fishing, mountaineering ...)

Very close to the lake is Vogel, the Ukanc cable car from which you can access the top of Mount Vogel and see spectacular views of the lake.

If you go to Lake Bohinj, do not stay at the beginning, go to the end of the lake and from here the route to the Savica waterfall begins.

Overnight:

Camping Zlatorog

Very well located on the edge of the lake. Unlimited plots and quite crowded, but we found a good place to locate ourselves and be able to enjoy three days in this wonderful place.

There is a children's area and an adventure park for the little ones.

Price: € 40 / night

15 SAVICA WATERFALL

We start the excursion in the same camping Zlatorog.

From the beginning until reaching the waterfall there are several tests and Games for children.

You can get with the AC to the entrance of the Savica waterfall.

Entry price: € 5

16 | VALLEY OF THE SEVEN LAKES (STARA FUZINA)

Beautiful excursion through the Valley of the Seven Lakes.

In total we did 28 km with 1600 m. unevenness. It is not a technical or difficult route, but requires a bit of fitness.

17 | SKOFJA LOKA

Very well preserved medieval city. You can visit the Capuchin church, the castle, the Hudiceva bridge and take a walk through its streets to see the beautiful buildings.

18 | Ljubljana

Capital of Slovenia. You can visit the Castle, the National Gallery, the central market, the Metelkova neighborhood and stroll through the city along the river enjoying its atmosphere and its terraces.

Overnight:

Livada restaurant. About 4 kilometers from Ljubljana. We went with the motorcycle, but the parking lot is very close to the road and there is a bus that takes you to Ljubljana.

It has no service and you only pay for parking. We had a quiet night, but it was the worst place we slept in the whole trip. Still fine to stay overnight and visit Ljubljana.

You have to cross the road and pay at the restaurant.

Price: € 10 / night.

19 | VELIKA FLAT

The largest shepherd village in Europe. The quickest way to get to Velika Planina is by cable car from Kamniška Bistrica and then on the two-seater chairlift to the top. You can park your car in Kamniška Bistrica and take a pleasant walk among pines and meadows watching the cows and hearing their cowbells. You can taste delicacies made with milk and see the curious shepherds' huts with their fir roofs that reach almost to the ground. Some are tourist accommodation.

Cable car + chairlift price: €17

20 | SOLCAVA PANORAMIC ROAD

One of the most picturesque roads in Slovenia. It starts in Solcava and crosses the Logar Valley between small villages.

It has several points of interest to stop at (farms where they sell local products, viewpoints, churches, small restaurants where you can have typical food from the Slovenian Alps ...)

We ate in a small hotel/restaurant with a nice garden (Planinski Dom Majerhold)

We did it with the motorcycle. It is a narrow road with curves and some unpaved sections. If you are very daring, you can do it with the AC.

21 | PANORAMIC ROAD LOGARSKA DOLINA

About 2 km. From the Ambroz Gregorc Farm, the road that runs through the Logar Valley leaves (there is a fee: € 8)

The Logarska dolina valley is one of the three valleys in the area from Solčavsko, once there you can also visit the other two, Robanovkot and Matkovkot.

It can be done with a motorhome and at the end of the road there is a fairly large parking lot to go up to see the Rinka Waterfall.

22 | RINKA WATERFALL

From the parking lot it is about 20 minutes to the waterfall. We wanted to lengthen the excursion to the refugebut the heavy rain made us turn around.

23 | POSTOJNA CAVE

A must-see karst cave. There is a unique spice in the world, the proteo or "human fish". The tour lasts approximately two hours and much of it is done in a little train.

The visit is guided, but there are no Spanish-speaking guides. We saw at the entrance that there are audio guides for €3,5.

We bought the tickets for the Postojna cave and the Predjama Castle online to avoid the queues. There was not a large crowd, but they are very visited places.

Ticket price Postojna Cave + Predjama Castle: €38,50

Overnight:

AC Postojna Cave area.

It is fine for an overnight stay if you are visiting the cave. It has a filling and emptying service for water and electricity.

Price: € 20/24 h.

24 | PREDJAMA CASTLE

It is a castle built in the mouth of a cave, in front of a precipice of more than 100 meters. It is about 9 km. from Postojna and there is a bus that takes you after visiting the cave. We went on the motorcycle. You can go by AC to the castle, but I think I remember that parking for motorhomes is complicated, there is not much space.

The two visits can be done more or less in about 4 hours.

25 | SKOCJAN CAVE

There are about 8 kilometers of underground passages with impressive caves, a river and several waterfalls.

It is included in the list of Heritage and we are not surprised because it is beautiful to see. For us it is an essential visit in Slovenia.

The visit is guided and lasts about two hours or three hours if you choose the long route.

Keep in mind that you have to go down and up about 500 steps.

Cave entrance price: €24

Overnight:

4 km. from Skocjan cave.

The campsite is fine, there are no marked pitches and there is plenty of space, but it is not suitable for motorhomes.

There is a narrow road with a very sharp curve and it was difficult for us to get out with the small AC. Yes it is suitable for camper.

Price: € 26 / night

26 | ISOLA

Our intention was to go to Piran, but we had read that it is very difficult to park there with AC. We decided to park in Izola and go to Piran with the motorcycle.

The beach is curious, there is no sand. People put towels and hammocks on the promenade and access the water by stairs.

In Izola we went to three areas to try to park and there was no space. In addition, there were many people on the coast and that plus the high temperatures made us give up visiting the Slovenian coast. The visit to Izola was fleeting.

Change of plans! We decided to spend the three days that we were going to spend on the Slovenian coast in Chamonix-Mont Blanc, an advantage of traveling with the house on our backs!

And up to here our route through Slovenia by camper or motorhome. Hopefully it will inspire you and pique your curiosity to get to know this beautiful country.
