What to see and what to do

Claramunt Tower Castle

At the end of the XNUMXth century, a tower was erected on a hill located at the end of the term of Claramunt. From this point, visual control of the valley of the Arroyo del Carmen and the road to Penedès was gained. Over time, the initial tower expanded, and the town grew under the shelter of the hill. The Castle of Torre de Claramunt has a hexagonal floor plan, and consists of a ground floor and three floors. The space is articulated around three patios. This complex structure reflects the succession of reforms and extensions that has been carried out at various times. Outside, in front of the east façade there is a section of the moat that should have surrounded the castle. Also preserved is the church of San Juan Bautista, originally Romanesque in style, which was surely part of the castle's original enclosure. The Tower had been since its construction within the orbit of the lords of Claramunt, who resided in the castle that bears their name in the Poble de Claramunt. However, in 1306, the Claramunt ceded their rights to the castle to the Cardona, and they moved to the Claramunt Tower, thus turning the Tower into a Castle. In 1318 they also gave up their rights to the Tower in favor of the Cardona, and they remained as mere castlans. In the XNUMXth century, however, the Cardona restored their jurisdictional rights. The castle is still the property and place of residence of the descendants of the Claramunt.
Next to the castle you will find the pmunicipal offices, in summer a delight to take a dip and eat at their restaurant. And outside at the entrance, there is a garden with a pond next to a stone hut located in the parking lot, in front of the sports center and social center.

Romanesque church of Sant Joan de la Torre

It is documented from 1157 and, given its location, next to the castle, it must have been built for the religious service of its tenants. Until 1868 it was a suffragan of the parish of Santa María de Calramunt. The old Romanesque building was replaced by a new baroque temple towards the first half of the 1790th century. The bell tower was completed in XNUMX. It has a basilica plan, with side chapels, a baptistery and a heart. Before the main altar is the sepulcher where the lords of the Tower were buried and in the nave those of some important families, such as the Guarro, the Romero or the Tort.

Pla de Sitges del Camaró

This archaeological site, cut by the BV-2134 road, which connects the urban core of La Torre de Claramunt with the C-244 road from Igualada in Sitges. It is a field of silos excavated in the travertine, of round and ovoid shapes, some of them communicated with each other, with a cabin bottom and a burial site from the XNUMXth-XNUMXth centuries excavated prior to the cut made by the cockpit. The materials collected at the site correspond to Iberian ceramics, Roman tile and dolium, and early medieval gray ceramics, which suggests a place of habitat with a long tradition due to its privileged location near an important communication route.
The most unique aspect is the type of material where these silos were excavated, travertine, which has allowed their conservation and reuse at various times in prehistory and history and makes them truly unique archaeological elements.
