Hello, traveling friends, welcome to this mega guide to traveling to Lisbon with children!
I am Pilar, an adventurous mother who, as a family, has already traveled to many countries in Europe as a family with our motorhome, but also visited many places in the world by plane and backpack, and even, part, in bicycle, family clotourism.
Portugal by motorhome It was one of our travel destinations a long time ago, but then we did not visit its capital, since for the capitals we always prefer to visit them by plane and as backpackers staying in one of their hostels or hotels.
Today I want to tell you about our unforgettable experience Lisbon with children. Are you ready to discover this city full of charm and magic as a family?
Let's go there!
About us
We are the kucavana familyWe traveled with our two children, ages 8 and 11, and our adopted dog Max. We usually travel in our motorhome called Kucavana, hence the name of our blog (Anna as a baby didn't know how to say motorhome and said Kucavana), but we also like to travel by bicycle touring or by plane and backpacking. We enjoy every learning experience as a family and we hope to help you enjoy it as much as we do. We do it by traveling.

How to get to Lisbon
By plane
If you come from Spain or any other European country, the fastest and most comfortable option is the plane.
El Lisbon Airport is well connected and only 30 minutes from the city center. Look how easy!
From the airport to the center you can take the metro, which is at the same airport. If you have purchased the Lisbon Card, You can pick it up at the airport and use it, in addition to almost all attractions and museums, and for the metro.
TIP: Or if you are 4 or more it is probably more comfortable and cheaper a private transport who will take you and your suitcases without getting dizzy to the accommodation you have.
By train
If you prefer one more trip sustainable financing model, the train is always the best option. It connects various European cities, and the Lisbon train station will leave you in the heart of the city.
Now still There is no direct train from Lisbon to Madrid and the duration of the journey is almost 14 hours despite the two capitals being very close.
By bus
Another more sustainable option than the plane and your own vehicle is the bus. Here you have direct options from Madrid to Lisbon and the journey takes about 7 hours. With Alsa you can leave from the South Bus Station in Madrid and arrive in Lisbon.
In own vehicle
It depends where you live in Spain This may be the best option for you. The road is good, and having your own vehicle gives you the flexibility to explore the surroundings of Lisbon with the whole family.
If you travel in your car, remember to activate the Portugal toll system before entering the highways of Portugal.
Don't forget your ID and travel insurance for the whole family
Before you get too excited, remember to prepare all the necessary documentation you will need in Lisbon.
Make sure you bring the Valid ID of all family members and, of course, a good travel insurance! You never know when those small mishaps can turn into anecdotes to tell, the price for the whole family cost us less than 40 euros for a week and what a mishap can cost is much, much more!
A tip: Don't travel without travel insurance. Avoid medical co-payments, have a lawyer who specializes in what may happen to you during the trip and avoid bad times due to cancellations or incidents on your route. The travel insurance that so far convinces us most for traveling as a family is Iati Family, Coverage price is ideal for traveling both in Spain, Europe and outside of it. It covers everything on your trip, not just medical topics essentials with a doctor and pediatrician 24 hours a day through the chat of your App. I leave you here a discount that they will give you at the end of requesting the quote.
Lisbon with children: Accommodation in our experience
The choice of where sleep in Lisbon with children It is an essential part of your trip. We always tend to look for apartments or hostels or hotels that you have as the best option. kitchen and common spaces to share with other travelers and that they have rooms if possible to stay all 4 together in the same room.
Looking for a family accommodation in Lisbon With these characteristics, we discovered a hostel that was great for us called «We Hate F Tourists«. A hostel, with a name that is not very appropriate for children like the F... hehe, but with a great youth and family atmosphere, with a kitchen to prepare quick meals and with common spaces where we can relax and talk with other travelers. In addition, it is located in a fairly good area to explore Lisbon easily and with rooms for 4 in a single room.
What we perhaps liked the least is the climb to reach the Hostel, but Lisbon is already like that, an up and down hill. Furthermore, later we saw that perhaps the price was not the best, although the truth is that the hostel is all new and very clean and they treat you luxuriously.

Saving money is the key to prolonging your Lisbon adventure!
Don't get obsessed with visiting all the tourist places inside, much less with children who get tired quickly.
TIP: The Lisbon Castle and Belem Tower They are amazing on the outside, but if you are looking to save or just not waste a lot of time, I recommend not visiting them inside because they don't have much to do either.
Instead, visit the Monastery of los jeronimos and the Pantheon, maybe I do recommend it to you with or without children. Just as impressive inside as out!
TIP: In the Monastery of los jeronimos There are long lines, there is only one ticket office to buy them and with machines, so I recommend you buy tickets before and online.

Let's start strong! The Belem Tower is like a fairy tale facing the sea. Children will feel like true explorers as they discover this impressive monument.
The ideal is to go with him tram 15 up there and enjoy taking photos and walks along its shore.
TIP: I do not recommend spending the money to enter it, it does not have much and the views are not better than many of the free viewpoints in the city. In any case, I would use the money in a boat ride around that children will like much more.
Next to the Belem tower you can also visit the monument to portuguese overseas fighters, can be visited for free and gives us information on a unique military history.
Yes or yes see the fairytale castles of Sintra
MUST: You can't miss Sintra and its fairytale castles. Children will immerse themselves in a magical world exploring the Pena Palace. Be sure to bring a camera to capture their shocked expressions!
Without a doubt for us it is something essential and I recommend that you if you have 3 days Skip seeing something of the old town of Lisbon and instead go to Sintra, it will undoubtedly be the best choice!

Sweet advice? Don't miss the Belem cupcakes in their place of origin.

Hop on one of Lisbon's famous yellow trams
Lisbon's yellow trams are quite a city symbol. Going up one of them is like taking a trip to the past. The children will love the experience and you will have the opportunity to enjoy the views they offer.
You will find both trams that make tours around the city, which are paid like a metro ticket, and trams that are actually elevators on very steep streets, which are paid differently. Of the latter you have the famous Bica funicular, which appears in many photos with clothes hanging, or around the Avenida da Liberdade, where the luxury stores and more shopping centers are located, you have many and less crowded.
Choose the one you like the most and enjoy the journey full of rattle and adventure when the cables are taken down and the driver comes out to reassemble them!
Have a drink with the family at the Pavilhão Chinês between a museum and a very top old cocktail bar
El Chinese Pavilion It is a magical place that combines the essence of a museum of toys and various old things with the vibe of a very cool, classy old cocktail bar.
Ideal to enjoy with the family in the afternoon, where children can explore and parents enjoy a unique cocktail. A place that you don't expect but that you will love!
By the way, ask for the “La Vaca Gorda” cocktail with ice cream and you tell me what's up! Brutal! However, it is not suitable for children that contain alcohol, although there are many others without alcohol, so don't worry.
See the monument to the Discoveries and take the opportunity to give a history class
This monument to the Discoveries, very close to the Belém Tower, is a tribute to the great Portuguese navigators.
Children will be inspired to discover the sculptures that represent historical figures. Plus, the riverside location makes it perfect for a family outing.
Take advantage of this monument to give a history master class to your children and suggest that they search the monument to the 5 discoverers most famous portuguese Age of Discoveries in the 15th and 16th centuries.
TIP: Here are the biggest ones 5 Portuguese discoverers:
Discoverer | Contribution and Discoveries |

Visit the impressive Jerónimos cloister
MUST: The Monastery of los jeronimos It is an architectural marvel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. But what really impresses is its cloister.
In fact, you can visit the church for free, but what is really worth it is the visit to the cloister. Children will be amazed by the beauty of this place. Prepare your camera to capture their expressions of admiration! AWESOME!
Remember buy the ticket before online, there are so many queues that I need to tell you!
Walk along the seashore and take photos of the Red Bridge in Lisbon
MUST: In the Lisbon Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology there is a free viewing point, spectacular for its architecture and its views of the Golden Gate of Portugal, the 25 de Abril Bridge, that particular red iron bridge in Lisbon that you have surely seen in photos.
Go there, walking from the Monument of the Discoveries and take a walk with your family. Take photos of the iconic April 25 Bridge, known as the "Red Bridge." Children will enjoy the port atmosphere and will be able to see the ships sailing.
Furthermore, from there in the distance you will also be able to see, if you stop carefully, the longest bridge in Europe, the Vasco da Gama Bridge, further north of Lisbon.
Eating in Lisbon with children: the Time Out Market at Mercado da Ribeira, where there is something to choose from
A market with options for all tastes? He Time Out Market is the answer in Lisbon!
From local dishes to international options, tapas, pizzas, hearty dishes... everyone will find something delicious. Ideal to satisfy the most demanding palates in the family and very fun due to the format of stands and central tables that there are!
See curious shops and trendy restaurants at the LX Factory
La LX Factory It is a creative space full of curious shops and unique corners, old factories converted into something very cool.
TIP: Here I recommend you go for it noon or evening ending up there if you want for dinner or a drink. It's a good place to buy a cool souvenir and to eat something.
Exploring this place with the children will be an adventure. Also, don't miss the bookstore there, old printing factory, beautiful that will captivate young and old. We were lucky enough to experience a very cool concert inside when we went.
Enter the oldest bookstore in the world still open today, registered in the Guinness Book of Records
Speaking of bookstores, you can't miss the oldest in the world! Listed in the Guinness Book of Records, this bookstore is a treasure for book lovers.
Is the Bertrand bookstore, in the heart of the Chiado neighborhood, and very close to a cafeteria that I also recommend visiting below.
There is not much special about the bookstore, since it is modernized, but the mere fact of having the record of being the oldest open bookstore in the world, I think it is worth it. And if you want a reading souvenir, think there are books in all languages inside!
Learn about some of Portugal's most illustrious people at the National Pantheon
Lisbon not only has impressive monuments, but also places full of history. The National Pantheon is a cultural treasure where children can learn about Portugal's most illustrious figures.
And the National Pantheon of Lisbon houses the tombs of several prominent personalities in Portuguese history. Among the notable figures buried in the Pantheon are:
- Amália Rodrigues (1920-1999): The most famous fado singer, considered the "Queen of Fado", the Portuguese Lola Flores so that we understand each other, and one of the greatest performers of this musical genre.
- Luís de Camões (1524-1580): Renowned Portuguese poet, the Portuguese “Cervantes” to understand us, author of “Os Lusíadas”, an epic that celebrates the achievements and exploits of the Portuguese.
- Humberto Delgado (1906-1965): Portuguese soldier and politician, known for his opposition to the Salazar regime during the Estado Novo dictatorship.
- Aquiles Machado (1866-1912): Internationally recognized Portuguese lyrical tenor.
- Sidónio Pais (1872-1918): Politician and military man who became president of Portugal, although his term was brief due to his assassination in 1918.
An educational experience in a place that will leave you speechless because of the beautiful place!
Ahh and I forgot to go up to the viewpoint of its tower, one of the most beautiful in the city.
Eat a Belem cake but Nutella while we visit the Lisbon Cathedral
A fun twist on tradition? Try a Nutella Belem cupcake!
While you enjoy this delight, visit the Lisbon Cathedral, the Sé. The perfect combination of flavor and culture in a single walk and with the yellow tram posing for a perfect family photo.
Discover fado with children and its history
MUST: Do you dare to immerse your children in the music and melancholy of Fado in a Fados house? Although it is more suitable for older children and teenagers, the experience of discovering the history of this musical genre is unique.
Get ready to feel the excitement of Lisbon through its songs!
Fado is a melancholic music with a story not suitable for children. Its origin is in the most humble neighborhood of Lisbon, Alfama, and it was sung by its prostitutes, who explained the sadness of their miserable lives.
It begins in Plaça Martim a free Fado tour, which left our mouths open during our visit to Lisbon, although we sincerely do not recommend it with children (you will see why soon).
On this tour, your guide, a local fadista and from the Alfama neighborhood, discovered a lot about fado for us. Starting at the Fado statue near Plaza Martim, the statue Mouraria Berço do Fado, this tour revealed to us the history of Fado, its origins with the prostitutes of Alfama, how it was converted into the national music of Portugal by the dictator Salazar and how it had a decline that today we are trying to save.
We also discovered what Fado houses are, a mystery to us until now. And I do recommend this, you should visit a Fados house with good fado with good gastronomy on the table, an experience that you cannot miss, especially if you have children older than 6 or 7 years old who will surely like the music and experience.
See Lisbon from the Santa Lucia viewpoint while a musician plays
MUST: Saint Lucia For us it is the best and most charming viewpoint with panoramic views of Lisbon.
Here you can enjoy the city while some talented musician of which creates a magical atmosphere. A perfect place to relax and enjoy the landscape with the little ones.
By the way, it is not just this viewpoint in the photo, continue forward and you will find a terrace viewpoint with a very cool kiosk bar.
Visit the oldest public fountain in Lisbon
In the heart of the city, you will find the oldest public fountain in Lisbon: Chafariz d'El-Rei, also known as the king's fountain which dates back to the 17th century.
A place full of history and that looks like a palace due to its baroque architecture!
Let the children play and marvel at this heirloom that has endured through the centuries.
Take the Santa Justa elevator and feel the excitement as a family
Go up to the sky of Lisbon with the Santa Justa iron elevator! If you have the Lisbon Card,, take advantage of it and go up the elevator that looks like the Eiffel Tower of elevators in Lisbon, but if not, save money and, above all, time in the super queue that there is and go up on foot.
TIP: Believe me it's not worth going up, and simply walk 5 minutes and you will be in the elevator viewing point which is really the beautiful thing.
Children will enjoy this exciting vertical experience. The views from above are impressive and next to it you have the Carmo archaeological museum Also highly recommended is your visit to learn about the history of the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. In this museum you can see a beautiful Gothic church destroyed in that earthquake, today without a roof, and a museum about it.
Play a little beach in the center of Lisbon and see the sand sculptures: Lisbon beaches with children
A little beach in the center of Lisbon never hurts with children!
Enjoy the coast and let the kids have fun building sand castles right in front of the famous Lisbon Commerce Square, although the beach is so small that there is not much to do without fighting with the neighbor over a piece of sand hehehe
Plus, marvel at the impressive sand sculptures that you will find along the mini beach that downtown Lisbon has.
Walk around Lisbon Castle
El Castle of St. George It is a place full of history and magic. Walk around and let the children be transported to bygone eras. The panoramic views of the city are simply spectacular from above.
TIP: Anyway, I do not recommend you enter, if you want to save time and money, it is one of those places you can avoid. It was a defensive castle and there is not much to see inside.
Have breakfast in the oldest and classiest cafe in Lisbon
Nothing like starting the day in the oldest and classiest cafe in Lisbon. It is a cafeteria that is not very large but that delights your senses with a breakfast full of tradition and style. The children will enjoy the experience and you will feel like you are in a period story in a classy old luxury place.
The cafeteria is near the Bertrand bookstore and is a place where illustrious figures from Portugal met, the cafeteria is called Cafeteria a Brasileira.
Explore the Lisbon Oceanarium
On the outskirts of Lisbon, there is the Oceanarium It is one of the largest and most fascinating aquariums in the world. Children will marvel at seeing sharks, exotic fish and other sea creatures.
