El Viewpoint of the River in Lanzarote is one of oCésar Manrique's most iconic workswhich I'll tell you about in our post about it, and one of the most spectacular places on the island. Its architecture, integrated into the landscape, its location right on the Famara Cliffs, and the most famous view in the Canary archipelago—La Graciosa floating on the ocean—make it an essential stop. Here I'll tell you all about my experience, my opinion, and what you should know before visiting this viewpoint, the essence of Manrique, for many his best work, and for me—I'll give you my opinion upfront—something you might be able to skip by visiting the free viewpoint next door.

The Mirador del Río is an architectural space created by César ManriqueIt is fully integrated into the cliff of the Risco de Famara, at a height of over 475 meters. Its design, barely visible from the outside, its harmony with the volcanic rock, and its openness towards the ocean make it a masterful example of organic architecture.
The main experience is the view towards the island of La Graciosa, considered one of the most impressive panoramas in the Canary Islands.

My personal experience visiting the Mirador del Río: Day 4 of our route – Views, volcanoes and palm groves
Route to the La Corona volcano, a must-see in Lanzarote in a week
This day was one of the busiest for sightseeing, but also one of the most peaceful and local of the trip. From Órzola, we said goodbye to Natalia, thanking her for everything she had done for us these past two days, and went to Ye first thing in the morning. A small village surrounded by vineyards and with views of the Atlantic.
From there, the trail to the La Corona volcano begins, an easy hike with panoramic views and the crater of a magical volcano, all enveloped in the unique silence found only in Lanzarote. The 4,5 km round trip offers a view of the volcano's crater; the trek is easy, and we only encountered two other hikers along the entire route.
We parked next to the church, where the village women were cleaning it. Then, heading towards the village, there's a sign indicating... crown volcano It's on the main road, but it's the only one along the entire route. Shortly after that sign, the track leading up to the volcano begins, just before reaching the town center. Once on it, you can't get lost, because there are no other paths besides the one that climbs the volcano.
The path only has one shady spot—a palm tree—the entire way, and it's all uphill. So bring sunscreen, plenty of water, and, like us, get an early start to do the hike in better light and less heat.
Reaching the top alone, with only the sounds of two crows and a kestrel (which surely nest among the rocks of the crater walls), is magical. It's worth stopping, contemplating, breathing, and feeling the special energy that resides in this volcano. Vitamins for the whole trip.
Mirador del Río, Manrique's work overlooking the sea, something you can skip on your route
After the easy and magical route to the La Corona volcano, we climbed to Mirador del RíoAlso designed by César Manrique on the site of a former military battery, it offers breathtaking views of La Graciosa and the islets of the Chinijo archipelago. It's one of those places that stays with you forever.
Although the price, I still maintain, seems excessive: €8,5 per adult to see a viewpoint with a restaurant and shop. The views are very nice, yes, but there are other viewpoints along the same road where you can enjoy the same views for free.
Haría, the town of a thousand palm trees
Then we went down to Would do, the village of a thousand palm trees, a green oasis amidst so much black rock of bad country (volcanic rock). We were lucky enough to coincide with the Saturday craft marketFull of local products and an authentic atmosphere. Make it work to be something to see in Lanzarote in a week.
We also visited the César Manrique House MuseumThe one in Palmeral, the other house he owned and where he spent his final years, perfectly conveys his connection to the island and its traditions. This house isn't built on lava flows, but it reflects his other passion: the more traditional and human side of Lanzarote. It's also well worth a visit.
Sunset at Famara Beach, a must-see in Lanzarote in 7 days
We ended the day with a Sunset from Famara beachWith the waves crashing below, surfers gliding among them, and the play of reflections on the wet sand. All with the imposing cliffs of Famara in the background. Magical.
Tinajo at the gates of Timanfaya for sleeping
We changed our sleeping location today and slept in Tinajo en this apartment Fantastic, fully equipped and luxurious with everything you could need. Our hostess was also incredibly friendly and recommended some excellent places to eat in Tinajo.
Where to stay near Mirador del Río
Here are my recommendations for places to stay in Lanzarote, all the places we stayed during our 7-day road trip around Lanzarote, which was perfect for us and which I definitely recommend. All the accommodations were fantastic for one reason or another:
| Location | Accommodations | Number of nights | Observations / type |
| Arrecife | Cardona Hostel | 1 night | 24-hour reception, private bathroom, affordable and centrally located, ideal for late arrivals from the airport |
| Orzola | Private studio, booking by phone only: 679 532 220 | 2 nights | Apartment with sea views and kitchen, ideal for excursions to La Graciosa and experiencing the most authentic north of the island |
| The Jar | Buda Apartment | 1 night | Complete, modern and comfortable apartment, good location for the volcano area, with kitchen. |
| Playa Blanca | Apartahotel Jardines del Sol 4* | 2 nights | Fully equipped apartment with kitchen, swimming pool and 4-star hotel services |
| Puerto del Carmen | Hotel Costas 4* | 1 night | 4* hotel with breakfast included, no kitchen, beachfront and seafront promenade |
The best travel insurance for Lanzarote
By the way, we We always travel with a travel insurance, So don't forget about it; it not only covers you for any problems in an accident or health issue, but also cancellations, legal support, luggage...A must-have! And here it is with a discount:
The great advantage of IATI is that you don't have to pay upfront for assistance and they have 24-hour support and even an app with an online doctor for any questions, ideal for traveling with children like us.
Conclusion: a must-see on any trip to Lanzarote
El Viewpoint of the River in Lanzarote It's much more than a viewpoint: it's a work of art integrated into a unique natural setting. Whether from the interior designed by César Manrique or from the free viewpoint, the view towards La Graciosa is one of the most beautiful in the Canary Islands.
It is an essential stop on any trip to the island and one of those places that stays etched in your memory.
