What is the Grand Canyon of the Colorado and why will it surprise you so much?
The Grand Canyon of the Colorado is a true wonder of nature, a vast system of canyons carved by the Colorado River over millions of years. Located in northern Arizona, this iconic natural monument is part of Grand Canyon National Park, a destination that attracts millions of visitors each year for its stunning beauty and magnitude.
This is the key to the surprise: the magnitude of what you will see! This impressive canyon stretches approximately 446 kilometers and reaches depths of more than 1,600 meters.
Imagine a canyon that is as big as from Gerona to Valencia! Your eyes will not know where to look, it is pure magic of nature.

The rock formations show geological layers that offer a window into our planet's past. Since the warm and reddish tones of the rocks to the grandeur of the Colorado River that meanders Through the gorge, the Grand Canyon is a visual experience that leaves everyone who has the privilege of seeing it breathless.
. Seriously, it won't leave you indifferent. This is coming from someone whose expectations the Grand Canyon greatly exceeded, everything and having read a lot before coming.
How to visit the best viewpoints of the Grand Canyon of the Colorado
To visit the Grand Canyon you can do it from 3 different entrances and areas: the South Rim, the North Rim or the West Rim. The distances between one area and another are 3 hours or more, so you will have to decide on a single area if you have only a few days during your trip.
La most popular is the South Rim and it is the most prepared to receive more tourism, but if you want fewer people and more tranquility the ideal is the area of the North Rim.
On the other hand, if you have a few days and you are going to Las Vegas, the closest entrance is the west rim where the most popular thing is to visit the Skywalk, a glass-bottomed observation deck at the Grand Canyon, or take a small plane from Las Vegas to visit the Grand Canyon by air.
We didn't have time to do the latter, but we would have loved it, it must undoubtedly be the best way to visit the Grand Canyon and realize the magnitude of this wonder of nature.

An unsurpassed trip in everything, where the Grand Canyon had the role of being the first national park we visited on the route and the first place to exceed our expectations of the trip. Before arriving at the Grand Canyon, we spent 3 days traveling Route 66 in a motorhome along its main stretch and what they say is the most beautiful.
Post: Guide to doing Route 66 in a motorhome: route, tips, map and regulations route and tips
We visited the Grand Canyon, entering from Williams, the last stop on our route along the 66. We entered the Grand Canyon of the Colorado through the South Rim, the most popular. During 24 hours We had the opportunity to enjoy it, arriving on a Wednesday afternoon and leaving on a Thursday afternoon as well.
I narrate here our experience that I planned to the millimeter so as not to miss anything of it.
Day 1: Discovering the fauna, camping and the best sunset of the Grand Canyon of the Colorado
After almost 3 days of traveling the legendary Route 66 in our motorhome through Arizona, we arrived at the Grand Canyon. It was a sunny afternoon and we were eager to explore this unique spot.
We head to South rim and, after obtaining our Annual Pass for the National Parks of the United States, we settled in the Mother public camp, strategically located in the heart of the park. This place was a find, priced at $18 per night and all the amenities needed for our camper!
Savings tip: If you are going to visit more than 3 national parks in the United States, buy your Annual Pass at the ticket office at the Park entrance, for $80 it is the cheapest option and since it is good for 2 cars, you can resell it later at Wallapop and it will cost you only 40$.
Once camped, we put on our boots and backpacks and went up to one of the free buses there is in the Grand Canyon National Park and we headed to admire the spectacular sunset from the red bus line viewpoints.
It was a magical evening, surrounded by the nature and the company of deer and elk that roamed around the viewpoints and our campsite. We went to sleep that night knowing that this place had exceeded all of our expectations.
Day 2: Exploring the Grand Canyon
The next day, we got up early and headed to the visitor centre to begin our day of adventures. We explore the exhibitions, we enjoyed an exciting Audiovisual postproduction and matching and we picked up the Junior Ranger booklet For the little ones.
From there, we headed on foot to the various viewpoints on the south side of the canyon, taking in every stunning view they offered us.
After a day full of exploration and delivering the Junior Ranger booklet and oath, obtaining the kids' first ranger badge, we climbed back into our camper and ventured to the viewpoints that were not accessible by bus and that fell on the way to our new destination, an experience that truly brought us closer to the immensity and majesty of the Grand Canyon! At the end of the day, we headed towards Monument Valley, where we would spend the night.
