Our route through the Basque Country by van consisted of approximately one week, but it is a route that everyone can do to their liking. 

The first day we went to Vitoria Gasteiz, the second we toured all of Bilbao. Upon leaving Bilbao we could not resist visiting Butrón Castle, then our route headed towards San Juan de Gaztelugaxe, an essential place if there ever was one. Finally we went to visit the Flix of Zumaia, Bermeo and Lekeitio, fishing villages that any traveler will fall in love with with an explosion of nature around them.

DAY 1 of the route through the Basque Country by motorhome or campervan: Vitoria by motorhome or camper

We start the route in our van in Vitoria Gasteiz, the capital of Alavesa. 

First you should know that Gasteiz is not the Basque name for Vitoria, but rather the old name of the town on which Vitoria was built. A curious data.

 The easiest option is to go from Bilbao on the BI-631 to Munguía and then take the detour from the BI-634 towards Gatica. You cross the town and following the same road you will find a detour on the right after 4 kilometers. There the castle is indicated on a small sign.

Once you arrive, there is a parking lot where you can park your motorhome or camper and, walking, you cross the river over the bridge and you will see the castle a few meters away.

This place has become popular with Game of Thrones and Dragonstone is in San Juan de Gaztaluagxe. A magical place formed by a natural islet where the sea has sculpted the rock forming an arch and a cave. Its name in Basque means castle on the rocks (or something similar), and previously, a castle stood here that served as a fortress in different battles, as well as a defense against attacks by privateers. Finally, today only a hermitage from the beginning of the XNUMXth century remains here.
