About us

We are the Kucavana family , and we travel with our two children and our adopted dog, Max. We usually travel in our motorhome, also called Kucavana, hence the name of our blog (as a baby, Anna couldn't pronounce "motorhome" and said "Kucavana"). But we also enjoy traveling by bicycle, by plane, and backpacking—the point is to have adventures as a family. The one writing this is me, Pilar, the mom of the family and perhaps the craziest one. I enjoy every new experience we have as a family, and I hope to help you enjoy traveling as much as we do.

How to visit the best viewpoints of the Grand Canyon of the Colorado

To visit the Grand Canyon, you can enter from three different entrances and areas: the South Rim, the North Rim, or the West Rim. The distances between each area are three hours or more, so you should choose just one area if you only have a few days during your trip.

The most popular is the South Rim and it is the best prepared to receive more tourists, but if you want fewer people and more tranquility, the ideal area is the North Rim.

On the other hand, if you only have a few days and you're going to Las Vegas, the closest entrance is the West Rim, where the most popular thing to do is visit the Skywalk , a glass-floored viewpoint overlooking the Grand Canyon, or take a small plane from Las Vegas to visit the Grand Canyon by air.

We didn't have time to do the latter, but we would have loved it, it must undoubtedly be the best way to visit the Grand Canyon and realize the magnitude of this wonder of nature.

Our Experience in the Grand Canyon of the Colorado on our trip along the West Coast of the United States in a Motorhome

Our visit to the Grand Canyon took place during our recent 21-day road trip along the West Coast of the United States in a motorhome. Post: United States by Motorhome

An unsurpassed trip in everything, where the Grand Canyon had the role of being the first national park we visited on the route and the first place to exceed our expectations of the trip. Before arriving at the Grand Canyon, we spent 3 days traveling Route 66 in a motorhome along its main stretch and what they say is the most beautiful.

Post: Guide to doing Route 66 in a motorhome: route, tips, map and regulations route and tips

We visited the Grand Canyon, entering from Williams, the last stop on our Route 66 road trip. We entered the Grand Canyon through the South Rim, the most popular entrance. We had 24 hours to enjoy it, arriving on a Wednesday afternoon and leaving on a Thursday afternoon.

I narrate here our experience that I planned to the millimeter so as not to miss anything of it.

Day 1: Discovering the fauna, camping and the best sunset of the Grand Canyon of the Colorado

After almost 3 days of traveling the legendary Route 66 in our motorhome through Arizona, we arrived at the Grand Canyon. It was a sunny afternoon and we were eager to explore this unique spot.

We headed to the South Rim and, after getting our Annual Pass for the US National Parks, settled into the Mother Public Campground , strategically located in the heart of the park. This place was a steal—only $18 a night and with all the amenities our camper needed!

Money-saving tip: If you're going to visit more than 3 US national parks, consider buying your Annual Pass at the park entrance ticket booth. At $80, it's the cheapest option, and since it covers 2 cars, you can resell it later on Wallapop for only $40.

Once camped, we put on our boots and backpacks and boarded one of the free buses in Grand Canyon National Park and headed to admire the spectacular sunset from the viewpoints on the red bus line.

It was a magical evening, surrounded by nature and the company of deer and elk that roamed around the viewpoints and our campsite. We went to sleep that night certain that this place had exceeded all our expectations.

Day 2: Exploring the Grand Canyon

The next day, we got up early and headed to the visitor center to begin our day of adventures. We explored the exhibits, enjoyed an exciting audiovisual presentation , and picked up the Junior Ranger booklet for the little ones.

From there, we headed on foot to the various viewpoints on the south side of the canyon, taking in every stunning view they offered us.

After a day filled with exploration and the Junior Ranger booklet and oath ceremony, where the kids earned their first Ranger badges, we climbed back into our camper and ventured to viewpoints inaccessible by bus, located on the way to our next destination —an experience that truly brought us closer to the immensity and majesty of the Grand Canyon! At the end of the day, we headed towards Monument Valley, where we would spend the night.

The wonder of the immense Grand Canyon of the Colorado

Conclusion on South Rim Grand Canyon Viewpoints

After exploring almost every viewpoint along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, I can say with certainty that each one is simply spectacular. Why? Because, in reality, the Grand Canyon itself is an astounding wonder.

Each viewpoint has its own charm, offering unique and surprising perspectives that you won't want to miss. Some viewpoints give you special insight into certain rock formations or points of interest, adding a unique layer to your experience.

Others will surprise you with different angles and colors, allowing the canyon to reveal its magic in different ways. In short, regardless of which viewpoint you choose to visit, I assure you that you will be amazed.

The real key is to savor every moment of your visit, absorb the grandeur of the canyon, and let yourself be swept away by the breathtaking nature that surrounds you. Don't stress about which is the best viewpoint, because each one has something special and unique to offer. So take a deep breath, enjoy the visual spectacle, and let the Grand Canyon leave you speechless!
