Tarragona by motorhome or van: UNESCO World Heritage Site, quiet beaches and nearby attractions

We propose a getaway and route through the province of Tarragona by motorhome or van. Where to visit a city with a Roman archaeological site declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco and where tranquility and good weather usually accompany the traveler around its villages of great heritage and culture among beautiful beaches.

Visit Tarragona city

For your first introduction to the province of Tarragona by motorhome or campervan, we invite you to explore its capital city. We recommend starting your journey with a stroll along the Rambla.

The Balcony to the Mediterranean

We can start our route through Tarragona city at the statue of the castellers and go up to the Balcony of the Mediterranean . There, we should "touch the iron railing," as tradition says it brings good luck.

Roman heritage

From there, we can make our first visits to the Roman heritage that Tarragona offers, such as the amphitheater, the walls and the Roman circus.

Outside, you can also visit the Roman aqueduct or “Pont del Diable”, the Roman quarry of “El Mèdol” or the “Torre dels escipions”, which are free and open to the public.

Tarragona old town

The city also has a very beautiful old town where we recommend seeing the Cathedral, the Praetorium and visiting some of its stately homes such as the “Casa Canals” or the “Casa Castellarnau”.

The Beaches of Tarragona city and surroundings

The closest beach to Tarragona city center is Miracle Beach. However, further out, you'll find other, much quieter, family-friendly beaches, away from the hustle and bustle of the more touristy beaches on the Costa Dorada, and usually frequented by locals: Arrabassada Beach, Savinosa Beach, Cala Romana, Playa Larga, and Playa de la Mora.

Wandering through the Marquise forest, you can reach one of the most secluded beaches: Cala Fonda, known as Waikiki. While very beautiful, access isn't easy. Nudism is practiced there and at Roca Plana.

Other nearby towns and places of interest in the province of Tarragona by motorhome or camper

As you can see, the municipality of Tarragona offers many options, but if you have more desire to stay in the area, we recommend other interesting places that are a few kilometers from the capital and that you should not miss on a route through the province of Tarragona by motorhome or camper.

The beautiful old town of Altafulla , the spectacular Tamarit Castle next to the beach, the picturesque Roc de Sant Gaietà , passing through the “Arc de Berà” a Roman arch by the roadside, and visiting the castle-monastery of Sant Miquel d'Escornalbou , where you should discover if something or someone is watching you.

What to eat in Tarragona

As for the food of the province of Tarragona, there are several options, such as calçots and their romesco sauce , which you can try in almost all restaurants, especially in season (approximately January-March).

Rice dishes ( especially those made with mantis shrimp or soupy rice dishes) and fideuàs are also well known in coastal areas.

And for a quick meal, we recommend coca de recapte, which you can find in many bakeries at affordable prices (it's a thin bread coca with vegetables, usually containing onion and red pepper) or having a nice vermouth in the city squares.

Tarragona by motorhome or van: where to park and spend the night

To spend the night in the province of Tarragona in a motorhome or camper, if what you are looking for is a motorhome and camper area, a good option could be to go to the free motorhome and camper area of El Catllar, since in Tarragona, although we have seen campers in some area, there is no area as such.

El Catllar also has some places of interest such as its Castle, it is in a quiet area and only about 15 minutes from Tarragona and the beach.

So, if you dare, here you will find Roman and medieval heritage, beaches, castles, good terraces ... all in a quiet city, with welcoming customers and with good weather. Enjoy!
