Tarragona by motorhome or van: UNESCO World Heritage Site, quiet beaches and nearby attractions

We propose a getaway and route through the province of Tarragona by motorhome or van. Where to visit a city with a Roman archaeological site declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco and where tranquility and good weather usually accompany the traveler around its villages of great heritage and culture among beautiful beaches.

Visit Tarragona city

For the first contact with the province of Tarragona by motorhome or camper, we invite you to enter its capital and city. For this we recommend you take a walk through its Rambla to start the route.

The Balcony to the Mediterranean

We can start the route through Tarragona city in the statue dels castellers and climb to the balcony of the Mediterranean. There, we must “touch iron” that is, touch the railing of the iron balcony, since tradition says that brings luck.

Roman heritage

From there, we can make the first visits to the Roman heritage that Tarragona offers us, such as the amphitheater, ramparts and Roman circus

On the outskirts, you can also visit the Roman aqueduct or "Pont del Diable", the Roman quarry of "El Mèdol" or the "Torre dels escipions", free and open access.

Tarragona old town

The city also has a very beautiful old town where we recommend seeing the Cathedral, el Praetori and visit one of their manor houses and “Casa Canals” or the “Casa Castellarnau”.

The Beaches of Tarragona city and surroundings

The beach that is closest to the center of the city of Tarragona is the Miracle beach. Pero on the outskirts, we can find other beaches, very quiet and familiar, away from the hustle and bustle of the most touristy beaches of the Costa Dorada and usually frequented by locals: the Arrabassada beach, Savinosa, Cala Romana, Playa Larga or Playa de la Mora.

Walking through the forest of the marquise, you can get one of the more hidden beaches: it is Cala fonda, known as Waikiki. Although it is very beautiful, access is not very easy. There and on the flat Rock, nudism is practiced.

Other nearby towns and places of interest in the province of Tarragona by motorhome or camper

As you can see, the municipality of Tarragona offers many options, but if you have more desire to stay in the area, we recommend other interesting places that are a few kilometers from the capital and that you should not miss on a route through the province of Tarragona by motorhome or camper.

The beautiful old town of Altafulla, the spectacular CTamarit Shipyard next to the beach, the picturesque Roc de Sant Gaieta, go through the "Arc de Berà" a Roman arch at the foot of the road, and visit the castle-monastery of Sant Miquel d'Escornalbou, where you must discover if something or someone is watching you.

What to eat in Tarragona

As for the food of the province of Tarragona, there are several options, such as the calçots and their romesco sauce, which you can try in almost all restaurants, especially in season (January-March approximately).

The rice (especially galleys or soups) and the noodles they are also well known in coastal areas.

And for a quick meal, we recommend the recapte coca, that you can find in many bakeries at affordable prices (it is a fine bread coca with vegetables, usually contains onion and red pepper) or make a good vermouth in the squares of the city.

Tarragona by motorhome or van: where to park and spend the night

To spend the night in the province of Tarragona in a motorhome or camper, if what you are looking for is a motorhome and camper area, a good option could be to go to the free motorhome and camper area of El Catllar, since in Tarragona, although we have seen campers in some area, there is no area as such.

El Catllar also has some places of interest such as its Castle, it is in a quiet area and only about 15 minutes from Tarragona and the beach.

So, if you dare, here you will find Roman and medieval heritage, beaches, castles, good terraces ... all in a quiet city, with welcoming customers and with good weather. Enjoy!
