1. What is Provence and where is it located

Provence is a historical region located in eastern France, bordering to the west with Italy and to the south with the Mediterranean Sea. Administratively Provence is part of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.

Its landscapes are a work of natural art, full of colour, vineyards, lavender fields (although I'll tell you later that it's not that bad…) and charming towns. A place that will take your breath away, but for landscapes you can't imagine!

Provence is a place that surprises without a doubt. For example, did you know that its inhabitants still have their own language? Provencal?

How to get to Provence by motorhome

If you travel from Spain to Provence by motorhome, you have different options to get there by road.

Low cost options but with many curves and slow movement and the most popular, fast and comfortable option that for safety is also the one that we recommend without a doubt.

This is via the A9 motorway, which crosses the border at La Jonquera, Spain, and connects with the A7 heading north. The A7, known as the “Autoroute du Soleil”, takes you through cities like Nimes and Avignon in the heart of Provence. Remember that now the A 7 in Catalonia is free of tolls, although later in France the toll costs are high and it can cost you about 100 euros to get to Provence by this French highway.

If you prefer a more picturesque and low-cost route, you can take the D900 road that crosses the Pyrenees through the Col du Perthus and takes you to the Mediterranean coast, although I do not recommend it of all, especially in a motorhome.

2. Why visit Provence by motorhome?

Let's start with the first. Based on what we have seen and experienced on our last trip, I will tell you some of the things we liked about this French region. Things that can make you decline to visit it.

Here are some reasons:

Streets of towns in Provence by motorhome

Villages listed as the most beautiful in France

Menerbes and Rousillon are just a few examples of the jewels you will find in Provence. Cobbled streets, houses painted in colors or white with blue doors, they seem to be taken from a fairy tale!

Lavender season, a plus that lasts a month

If you visit Provence from the end of June to the end of July, you will be surprised with lavender fields that dye everything in lilac. Spectacular! Although there are fewer and fewer lavender fields... so don't create too many expectations... in the end this could be the game of looking for Wally but looking for lavender... I'll tell you more later.

Surprising and very diverse landscapes in Provence by motorhome

You love nature? Provence will surprise you! You can't miss the impressive landscapes of different colorsrents and amazing. An example is the ocher and reddish colors of Rousillon and the Provençal red or the Camargue marshes full of wild fauna and blue colors of the deepening sea.

Crystal clear water pools

In summer, the pools of the Verdon or Ardèche rivers They are the perfect place to cool off after touring the region. A refreshing and fun experience for the whole family! In addition, you can make the roads comfortably, parking your motorhome, with Excursions such as Verdun from Aix-en-Provence.

Roman heritage in Provence by motorhome

History lover? In Provence you will find vestiges of ancient Rome, such as amphitheaters, theaters, triumphal arches and Roman aqueducts. A little Rome in the XNUMXst century in Provence! The most comfortable and safest way to visit Arles and Nimes (we had experience of robberies that I explain below) is that from Avignon take the guided tour of the Rome of Provence.

World Heritage Site by UNESCO

Provence is home to UNESCO-recognized treasures such as the Papal Palace and the Pond d'Avignon, or the majestic Pont du Gard, a Roman architectural marvel!

Provencal gastronomy

I can't stop mentioning how delicious the nougats provencal A delight that you cannot stop trying, very similar to our nougat!

Finally, if your thing is to go to places where the motorhomes are welcome, in Provence that's how you feel it. In many municipalities of Provence there are motorhome areas, many free municipal ones with all the services for emptying and filling water, when not private areas at a good price with good services.

3. But we didn't like everything about Provence in France… what we liked least

As you already know, in the articles I write about our travel experiences I always tell you both the good and the wonderful as what we did not like so much.

I always tell you that all this they are opinions y fruit of our own experience. You may go and have another well-deserved opinion. But since this is still a personal blog of our family trips, I like to express what we have experienced and our perceptions and opinions. So be prepared for the less positive opinions about Provence.

What we liked least about Provence in a motorhome In France it is...

Lavender, the fair and pure instagramer posturing tourism

Provence is home to lavender everywhere, so they say and so the photographs we see always show.

But the reality is far from it, it is not so. There are fewer and fewer lavender fields in Provence and instead there are much more vineyards in their fields for market prices.

Perhaps because of the expectations that we carried the theme of seeing lavender fields, we were quite disappointed. Not even around the lavender museum itself were there lavender fields, imagine! In fact, looking for lavender fields was like look for wally in Provence. Also, for more INRI, when you found one it was a cigar! commercial tourism full of people dressed in white taking their instagramer posturing photos as they jumped in fear around the bees that huddle in the lavender! What a show, fun it was! Hey, but we also took pictures…but not in white, in black, ejjeej

Robberies and criminals on the prowl

Another thing we didn't like, but not at all in some of the areas of Provence, especially in the larger cities, was the insecurity. In towns like Arles, We could see in broad daylight and in full sun how they were going to rob our neighboring motorhome on the side! As you can hear... Thank goodness Jose saw them coming and stood on the other side of the window staring and we prevented our neighbor from being robbed, they were directly going to break his window glass with an iron.

This added to the fact that they tried to ripped off twice at two highway gas stations It made us not like the security issue at all. They tried to distract us to get out of the motorhome and probably go in to steal.

It must be said, but, that in the majority of small towns, but the feeling is totally safe. But if you can avoid parking and spending the night outside a campsite in Arles, Marseille, Nîmes, Avignon and large cities, the better.

4. What to do and what to see in Provence by motorhome? 15 must-sees of Provence in France

Now yes, we get into the matter to help you plan your route. I will try to make the list of 15 of the places that we consider essential to visit Provence by motorhome or whatever.

Here is a list of places that you cannot miss on your trip through Provence:

Avignon by motorhome, UNESCO World Heritage
Avignon by motorhome, UNESCO World Heritage

Avignon by motorhome

With its famous bridge, which has been sung so much in the song "Sur le pont d'avingnon-…" and the Palace of the Popes, this city will transport you in time. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it is really worth it. It was a Papal city and not all cities except the Vatican have been. That added to the spectacle of his walls and to the river Rhone They give it an air of an essential place for your safe route. In addition, I advise you to not miss anything to do this guided tour of Avignon.

Also if you have kids Avignon is great to go to the amusement park Spirou very close.

Just a note, in the free motorhome area there are usually robberies, and the truth is, the nightlife in certain areas of the city is not very safe, so I advise you to go to a camping site in the city on your visit to Avignon by motorhome.

Lavender Museum of Provence
Lavender Museum of Provence

Lavender Museum of Provence by motorhome

Discover the world of this aromatic plant and its importance and current real decline in the region with this museum. An essential museum to understand the reality of lavender in Provence.

Verdun Gorges by motorhome

If you like the hiking and turquoise waters, this is your paradise! One of the most amazing places of nature in Provence.

To visit these gorges there is a winding scenic road, a bit curvy and not very wide, but with amazing views. A good alternative if you prefer comfort and park the wheel for a while on these narrow roads is to take this excursion to the Verdun gorges that leaves from Aix-en-Provence where you can safely leave your motorhome.

Rousillon by motorhome

walk around its ocher streets and visit the old ocher mines to surprise before a reddish and ocher world different, surely, to the landscapes that you expected in Provence in a motorhome.

It does not have a motorhome area but it does have parking reserved for us without service, which is a good point to visit Rousillon.

Menérbes, one of the most beautiful villages in France in a motorhome through Provence
Menérbes, one of the most beautiful villages in France in a motorhome through Provence

Ménerbes

One of the most beautiful villages in France with its medieval charm, cataloged as such, and so we corroborate it. Like all the towns in Provence, it has an air of decadence, but with restaurants and romantic terraces and with one of the points with lavender fields, which when they are in bloom, delight the photographers of the house.

Sault by motorhome

In summer, the lavender fields nearby will leave you speechless, it is one of the enclaves with the most lavender fields in Provence. Some very touristy, but it is what lavender and Provence have become. That does not mean that these fields are not beautiful.

In Sault and all this area further to the west, lavender blooms the latest in Provence, so if you go at the end of June or the beginning of July, you may not see it in its full splendor.

Natural Park of the Camargue in the South of Provence by motorhome

¡Flamingos, wild horses, birds and unique landscapes of marshes they are waiting for you!

No doubt the Camargue by motorhome It is one of those points that we like to repeat. It brings together the Mediterranean Sea, animals, nature and medieval towns with a curious culture. We call it the French Andalusia since in its streets you will see both the black bulls and the French flamenco sung.

Roman theater, Arles by motorhome, beautiful but it is not recommended to park and spend the night in a motorhome here
Roman theater, Arles by motorhome, beautiful but it is not recommended to park and spend the night in a motorhome here

Arles

A city full of history and culture, with its famous amphitheatre, theater, baths and a thousand Roman heritage sites. The little french rome that they call him

A place that generates me, for what I have explained to you above about insecurity, controversy for a recommendation. A city full of amazing heritage but one that exudes total insecurity in a motorhome. A pity.

The most comfortable and safest way to visit Arles and Nimes (because of the experience of robberies that I explain to you that we had) is that From the Avignon campsite, take the guided tour of the Rome of Provence and take you by bus.

Valensole

More lavender fields to enjoy and these are some of the first to bloom. The other great point apart from Sault, of lavender fields is Valensole. If you go to end of June or beginning of July this is your place if you are looking for lavender on your route through Provence in a motorhome.

Pont du Gard, UNESCO World Heritage Site
Pont du Gard, UNESCO World Heritage Site

Pont du Gard by motorhome

An impressive Roman aqueduct, which you must visit, a marvel! World Heritage Site by UNESCO, this Roman aqueduct, in the shadow of that of Segovia, will surely impress you.

Another good thing is that you have the Rhône at your feet and a swim in summer can be another gift from the place.

Pont d'Arc in l'Ardèche by motorhome
Pont d'Arc in l'Ardèche by motorhome

Montelimar and the Ardèche gorges by motorhome

If you like chocolate and sweet Montelimar you will fall in love. is the nougat capital, the sweet of Provence par excellence. The Ardèche area is an area of villages and pools of water formed by the Ardeche river. A refreshing place and also full of leisure activities and visits to amazing caves.

Of course, in summer book camping with time, it is not very easy to go by motorhome!

Nimes

Another corner with Roman traces that you cannot miss is Nimes.

The most comfortable and safest way to visit Arles and Nimes (because of the experience of robberies that I explain to you that we had) is that From the Avignon campsite, take the guided tour of the Rome of Provence and take you by bus.

In Nimes begin your exploration at the majestic Roman amphitheatre, The Arena, where you can imagine the epic gladiatorial battles. Then admire the Square House, an exceptionally preserved Roman temple. Stroll through the charming historic center and immerse yourself in the narrow cobbled streets, discovering elegant boutiques and cozy cafes. The Magne Tower, a former watchtower, offers panoramic views of the city from its top.

Don't miss the modern Museum of Romanity, which showcases the city's rich Roman heritage. And for a taste of authentic Provençal culture, explore the Les Halles covered market, where you'll find fresh local produce.

In short, Nîmes blends the grandeur of the Roman past with contemporary life, creating a captivating destination for those seeking history, architecture, and Provençal lifestyle. Of course, it does not have a motorhome area and it is not easy to visit it with your house on wheels.

    Hello family!
All the information is very useful, you have driven me crazy with the topic of thefts. I was thinking of going next week, with the van and my dog, and I'm thinking about whether to avoid those cities with so little security, because in addition to the fact that I'm going alone, with the dog they won't let me get on buses to get closer to the town...
    Any additional recommendations?
