The route of the Cathar Castles

The history of the Cathars and the misnamed Cathar Castles

On this route we go through the misnamed “Cathar Castles”, you will see why, an area in the south of France, near Catalonia. Located in a region of the department of the Eastern Pyrenees and the Aude.

In reality, most Cathar castles are not castles as such, but are fortresses built in the Corbières mountains, after the end of the civil and religious wars of the thirteenth century. Only some were besieged during some of the crusades by the nobles who supported Catharism, but not all. At the end of that conflict the new power belonged to the King of France who, to defend the area from his Catalan-Aragonese neighbors, reinforced the territory with a series of pre-existing fortresses, in the Corbières mountains. This is the real reason for the existence of these fortresses.

But it is already known that the Cathar myth, the myth of Montsegur, sounds better to many people today, which is why, in an act of ignorance and mythology, this Cathar religious current is associated with the castles of this area.

The Cathar myth: the truth

The reality of the Cathar myth is reduced to the mere struggle for power of different political entities in the Middle Ages that took advantage of religion to make a good excuse to fight for power.

The Cathar "heresy" was but a variant between the forks of medieval Christianity. Catharism was a response to usury and the enrichment of the nobility and clergy, but it contained in itself puritanical Christian traits and a totally sectarian mysticism. All very far from the simplistic idealization of many current neo-Cathars. That's the truth

The castles that make up the route of the Cathar Castles in France

These castles, actually defensive fortresses that protected the border with Aragon and then Spain, are five that are considered on the route of the Cathar Castles.

In total these 5 are:

  • The Castle of Aguilar;
  • Peyrepertuse Castle
  • Puilaurens Castle
  • Quéribus Castle
  • Termes Castle

The 5 are defensive fortresses that protected the southern border of the kingdom of France from Aragon first and Spain later. Until in 1659 the signing of the Peace of the Pyrenees ceded Roussillon and Cerdanya to France and transferred the French-Spanish border to the crest of the Pyrenees.

Location of the Cathar castles

The five castles are located in the triangle formed by Perpignan, Narbonne and Carcassonne, 50 km from Perpignan. From Barcelona it takes almost 3 hours by motorhome or camper van (242 km). Continue on the A-9 motorway and exit at Perpignan.

Between the 5 castles there is a short distance, from the furthest from one end to the other there will be about 30 km, so they can be visited well on a getaway.

Hours and prices of the Cathar castles

Between the end of October and mid-March, the castles are closed. They can be visited but you will not see everything or its interior more careful. The good thing about this time is that it's free.

Between March and October, the price of the tickets is approximately around € 4 to € 10 per adult and free for small children, a reasonable price.

In general, it is around 10 in the morning until 6 in the afternoon, but it depends a bit on the cold castle you visit.

Our route in this getaway along the route of the cathars (France)

Our route through 4 destinations around the Cathar Castles in France

1 LES ORGUES D'ILLES SUR TET, THE FRENCH MINI CAPPADOCIA OR THE FRENCH MINI BRYCE CANYON

We start the route with one of the great discoveries of 2019, the Orgues D'Ille Sur Tet, take note of this site, and it is that, this kind of Bryce Canyon on a small scale, is a truly surprising place.

We had never heard of this place and we were pleasantly surprised.

The Orgues are rocky formations of sand, constantly changing and falling apart with the erosion of the wind and the rain. We loved it!

It also has a parking to spend the night right at the entrance and access them costs € 4,50 per person.

By the way, from there you will have an incredible panoramic view of the Canigó!

2 CATARIAN CASTLE OF QUERIBUS

We continue the route to the north, the next stop is one of the most emblematic castles on the route of the Cathar castles, the Castle of Quéribus.

This Castle belonged to the Counts of Barcelona, the King of Aragon and from the XNUMXth century to the King of France. Some Cathars stayed in it during the Crusades in the early XNUMXth century but it was not attacked. It is located above the town of Cucugnan.

A small but imposing castle, impressive and different. Situated at the top of a hill at 728 meters of altitude, it is our favorite to date.

Very easily accessible, it can be visited inside in summer, it is in a very good state of conservation and the views from it are a real wonder!

The entrance costs € 7 per person and in this case, you can also spend the night in the same access parking, of course, be careful with the wind, it blows very hard in that area!

 We continue!

3 THE PRECIOUS VILLAGE OF CUCUGNAN

On the way to another of these impressive castles, we find a surprise along the way, a small town called Cucugnan, it certainly deserves a stop for its charm. From there, you will have views of the Quéribus castle and also the Peyrepertuse castle. In addition, you can visit the small and charming windmill located in the heart of the town and also try one of the delicious pastries in the village pastry shop.

4 CATARIAN CASTLE OF PEYREPERTUSE

We go to the imposing castle of Peyrepertuse, also known as “The citadel of vertigo”.

It is located 7 kilometers from the Quéribus castle. Imposing and much larger than the previous one, it is built on a 400 m long crest resting on the bedrock.

It is in the border area and formerly belonged to the Counts of Besalú, then to the Count of Barcelona and then to the kings of Aragon. It was in 1240 that it entered the domain of the King of France. From that time on, the castle became important as a bastion on the border.

It is accessed from the same parking lot by a 20-minute path, the entrance costs € 7 per person.

You can spend the night in the motorhome area located in the village of Dulhac-Sous Peyrepertuse, a few kilometers from the castle, it is free, very quiet, it has a toilet and emptying and filling of water.
