We continue sharing our family bike route around Lake Constance this summer, heading towards Uldingen. It was an almost 180 km experience cycling together as a family and staying at campsites in our tent, which we all thoroughly enjoyed.
Today is the 3rd stage, the 3rd day on the road, of this adventure, after yesterday's Stage 2 in which we arrived in Constance and Stage 1, from Austria, to Arbon, Switzerland (38 km).
This third stage of our trip has become one of the most memorable for us. Not only because the bike path offers minimal inclines and mostly downhill sections, but also thanks to the numerous visits to beautiful towns and exciting museums that the German Lake Constance region has to offer —for me, the most beautiful part of our Lake Constance cycling route.
About us
We are the Kucavana family , and we travel with our two children and our adopted dog, Max. We usually travel in our motorhome, also called Kucavana, hence the name of our blog (as a baby, Anna couldn't pronounce "motorhome" and said "Kucavana"). But we also enjoy traveling by bicycle, by plane, and backpacking—the point is to have adventures as a family. The one writing this is me, Pilar, the mom of the family and perhaps the craziest one. I enjoy every new experience we have as a family, and I hope to help you enjoy traveling as much as we do.

Videoblog Stage 3 Lake Constance by bike
Departure from Constanza towards Uldinguen
We started this exciting day with a hearty breakfast at the welcoming Bruderhofer Campsite in Constance, our home base during our stay in the city. This campsite , with its lakeside beach and impeccable facilities, had already completely captivated us last night, and today we woke up fully recharged for this third day of our bike tour.

First Stop: Flower Island – Mainau
Our first stop of the day was Flower Island , also known as Mainau . On the way there, we made a small mistake by following Google Maps directions instead of the main bike path . Despite the steep hills, we were treated to spectacular views of the lake and fields filled with cows. These panoramas made the climb worthwhile.
Upon arriving at Mainau Island , we realized that free access is not permitted. A general admission ticket is required , which includes entry to the museums and palaces.
Since our intention was to make a quick visit, we opted not to go inside, and here's where it gets exciting. We decided to take a ferry to cross to the other side of Lake Constance and avoid a section of the trail that had steeper terrain and, according to what we'd read, was rather boring.
Our main goal was to make the experience as enjoyable as possible for the kids, and in that heat, we also wanted to take things slow.
Crossing the Lake: The Ferry Crossing
We headed to the Dingelsdorf ferry , which was included in the Bondensee Card . However, we made another small mistake by changing ferries to save 15 minutes (it was leaving earlier) and ended up going to Wallhausen , which turned out to be a private ferry . But as they say, adventures always hold surprises!
Überlingen: A Charming Medieval Town
The ferry took us to Überlingen , a town with a medieval charm that captivated us with its tourist bustle.
Here, we take the bike path along the lake and continue our journey towards Uldinguen , our destination for the day.
The drive there is simply beautiful, with secluded lakeside beaches where we could stop and enjoy the scenery. Although there were some stretches close to the road, these were brief and always safe.
Birnau: Vineyards, Vineyards and Delicious Cherries
The drive to Birnau was a true delight, as we passed through vast vineyards and vines amidst a breathtaking landscape. From there, we admired the views of Maurach Castle , surrounded by vineyards and nestled beside the lake . A truly magical place.
On our way, we came across a cherry stand and couldn't resist the temptation to try these delicious fruits, the best of the whole trip.
Finally, we arrived at our base campsite for the day, Camping Birnau-Maurach , which quickly became our favorite campsite of the entire trip. With its lakeside beach , good restaurant , and playground , the children were thrilled.
But what excited them most was the huge number of tricycles available. Our little ones had a blast!
Uldinguen and UNESCO cultural treasures
After settling in, showering, and enjoying lunch, the children had a great time riding the tricycles . The afternoon promised even more adventures. We decided to continue cycling and visit the Stilt House Museum in Uldingen , a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This museum , which we could visit for free with the Bondensee Card , offered us a unique experience, unlike any other European museum . The stilt houses are ancient dwellings built on pillars over the lake during the Bronze Age —a truly impressive sight.
Finally, after leaving the museum, our little ones also enjoyed playing in the stilt playground next to the museum.
Before the museum closed, we used our Bondensee Card to visit the Reptilienhaus in Uldingen , a place teeming with reptiles that left everyone amazed. Some were trembling with fear, while others were thrilled to see the snakes slithering around.
Rest and preparation for the next stage 4
After an exciting day, we returned to the campsite . The evening turned out to be long and thrilling, as our little ones made new French friends and enjoyed tricycle races and games. It was the perfect end to an ideal day on our bike tour around Lake Constance with children.
And so, our third stage concludes, but more exciting adventures await in the following stages. I promise that in the next installment I'll share our exciting visit to Austria and the surprises that await us at Lake Constance . You won't want to miss it!
Until next time, fellow cyclists! Let's continue enjoying our bike ride around Lake Constance!
Stage 4: From Uldingen to Kressbronn, with a visit to the medieval town of Meersburg with 2 castles and a visit to the Zeppelin museum in Friedrichshafen (41 km)
