1 Tarifa and its districts such as Bolonia, the first stop on the Cadiz coast by van
We started our road trip along the best spots on the Cádiz coast in Tarifa, a year-round paradise for windsurfing and kitesurfing . In Tarifa, finding a spot to park a campervan or motorhome overnight is very difficult in the summer, but there are plenty of campsites and a designated overnight parking area right in the town center for a very reasonable price. They're more lenient in winter, and you won't have as many problems.

Los Lances beach

Bolonia, a small district of Tarifa with a beach paradise of dunes
We're still in Tarifa, continuing our road trip along the Cádiz coast in a campervan. Near the town of Tarifa lies Bolonia, a small hamlet belonging to Tarifa itself, just 15-20 minutes away. This tiny village, with little more than two streets, boasts impressive attractions: dunes, stunning natural pools, Roman archaeological sites, and breathtaking viewpoints await you.
What to see in Bologna
Impressive dunes
Upon entering Bolonia beach, we will find on the right the impressive Bolonia dune, easily observable due to its immensity.
The Bolonia dune is over 30 meters high and extends 200 meters inland, with a width of about 500 meters.
The climb to the dune is quite steep and you have to expend energy to overcome the resistance of the step on the sand. Once at the top it is the only place to see the coast of the African continent, which can be clearly seen during the sunniest days. The views are especially worth it at sunset.
Roman Ruins of Bologna
To the left of Bologna, near the district of El Lentiscal you will find these precious Roman vestiges.
The Archaeological Site of Bailo Claudia , declared a National Historic Monument. An ancient Roman city that surprises with its state of preservation, with urban planning typical of its time.
Natural pools, a must on our route along the Costa de Cadiz by van or motorhome
To the left of Bolonia, after passing the town of El Lentiscal, and walking to the end of the beach we would reach an area called the Baños de Claudia, where the sand mixes with rocks and when the tide is at low tide the natural pools of Bologna. A spectacle of nature.
Nearby, you will find Chorrito de la Teja, a spring near the natural pools of Baños de Claudia. It is said that the water from that spring together with the land of the place form therapeutic sludge with which people usually smear themselves, and then wash themselves in the natural pools of Bolonia.

2 Barbate, second area of our route along the Cadiz Coast by van or motorhome
We continue doing kilometers and we do not go to the Barbate area. Our second favorite destination on the Cádiz Coast.
The municipality of Barbate boasts 25 kilometers of coastline spread across 8 main beaches, stretching from Zahora to Zahara de los Atunes . One of the most famous beaches, and a must-see in Barbate, is Playa de los Caños de Meca, which we'll tell you about below.
In Barbate you will find small coves, natural waterfalls, the Trafalgar Lighthouse, a hippy market and very good vibes. Some of our recommendations for visiting Barbate are the following:
Zahora Beach
On Zahora beach you can see in the background the Cape of Trafalgar with its 30-meter -high lighthouse.
If you like paradisiacal beaches, alone and shallow, I recommend visiting Playa Zahora, it is a good option if you want to enjoy nature without noise or interruptions. A beach also to practice nudism.
It is also a good place to spend the night in a motorhome or camper since there are areas for motorhomes and campers, for about € 10 a night, and campsites
Mangueta Beach
A beautiful and quiet beach between Zahora and El Palmar that you should not miss.
It is located near Zahora beach, where you can walk along the shore.
The access it has from Caños de Meca is a narrow and dusty road which in its final section must be done on foot, it is not recommended to go with small children, however it is ideal for cycling.
The beach, like almost all of this area, is long and wide, although in this area the sand is coarser.
The Caños de Meca
This hamlet of Barbate, on the Cadiz coast, became a nerve center of the hippie movement of the 60s and today continues to be a haven of peace to enjoy 'karma', its endless beaches with crystal clear and nudist water, cliffs that gain ground from the sea and its Natural Park of La Breña and Barbate Marshes.

A natural park that serves as a viewpoint, the view from here is spectacular. You can see part of the coast and its vast expanse of sea, stretching over 1800 meters along the beach. One of the park's tourist attractions is the diverse ecosystems that thrive here, thanks to its cliffs and hiking trails. Among the things to see in Barbate, this is one of the most beautiful spots you can visit. And within this natural park, don't forget to visit the world's largest dovecote, listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. The Palomar de la Breña , located at the Hotel Palomar de Breña, is a spectacular 400 m² dovecote with almost 8000 nesting boxes. Visiting it is free if you ask permission from the hotel staff.
Caños de Meca, the district
It is just a small street of low houses located on top of a cliff, but in summer it becomes the summer 'mecca' of hippies, surfers, bohemians, nudists, naturists and that increasingly attracts a family tourist.
Los Caños owes its name to the large number of streams or jets of fresh water that emanate from its cliffs.
At the end of the naturist beach 'Little Lulú', in half an hour of walking it is worth visiting some of its waterfalls, fresh water jets.
Finally, talk about its miraculous mud that bathers extract directly from the rock of the beach to smear the body and that leaves the skin soft and smooth.
Zahara
Zahara de los Atunes is an autonomous local entity of Barbate, a district of 1000 and few inhabitants famous for its gastronomy of tuna and very touristy.
Therefore, you should also visit Zahara de los Atunes. There you'll find its Almadraba Bluefin Tuna Museum, dedicated to one of the most popular fresh products in Barbate, so it's no surprise that they've dedicated a museum to it: the Tuna Museum.
In addition, the museum has part of a tasting shop and they do visits with tasting, but time must be arranged through its website.
Finally, in Zahara de los Atunes you can also visit its castle . Called the Chanca Palace of Zahara, Jadraza Castle, or the Royal Palace of Almadraba, this castle, with its quadrangular base, is an integral part of the city's military history.

In Cadiz, you must not miss a visit to its colonial-style cathedral, the Cathedral of Santa Cruz , which you can see from its immense promenade near the sea that reminds us of the Malecón in Havana.
Finally, and of course, don't miss its famous La Caleta beach , where you can witness the most beautiful sunsets. And if you climb up to Santa Catalina Castle , you'll have the best views of La Caleta – something well worth doing.
