If you're looking for the perfect winter holiday destination that combines dreamlike landscapes, snow activities for all levels, and that alpine magic that seems straight out of a fairy tale, Interlaken in winter is the place for you.

Surrounded by the imposing lakes Thun and Brienz and guarded by peaks such as the Jungfrau and the Eiger, this little Swiss gem has something for everyone. And when I say everyone, I mean couples, solo adventurers, families with children (like mine) or even groups of friends ready to enjoy the winter wonderland and the snow.

I'll tell you everything you can do, what to see in Interlaken in winter and at Christmas, when we went, and how you can make the most of every corner of this destination.

Our route through Switzerland at Christmas

Our plan? A week-long route, 10 days round trip, through the most enchanting corners of Switzerland at Christmas : First, the Swiss capital, Bern, with its various Christmas markets (and the aroma of cheese). Then we visit the picture-postcard views of Interlaken and, from there, use the different family-friendly ski slopes of the Jungfrau Ski Region as a base, such as those in Grindelwald and Mannlinchen . Next, we visit the impressive Aletech Arena ski area on the other side of the Jungfrau, where there are three fairytale villages accessible only by cable car. And finally, we head to the cozy and family-friendly Crans Montana . All this, combining enchanting landscapes, trains and cable cars, and lots of family laughter.

Why travel to Interlaken at Christmas or in winter?

Interlaken is the perfect starting point for exploring the Jungfrau region , home to the iconic mountain of this part of Switzerland and the highest peak in the Jungfrau massif at 4.158 meters. It's one of the most famous ski areas in Switzerland , which we, of course, experienced as a family and can say is absolutely stunning.

But Interlaken is not only a dream for snow lovers; it is also a destination that comes alive at Christmas with a special magic.

How to get to Interlaken

Interlaken, located in the heart of Switzerland between Lakes Thun and Brienz and surrounded by the majestic Alps, is easily accessible from anywhere in the country . Whether you prefer to travel by train, car, or plane, here's a complete guide to help you plan your arrival.

To Interlaken, Switzerland, by plane

Although Interlaken does not have its own airport, you can fly to the main Swiss cities and continue your journey by train or car.

• Zurich Airport (ZRH): This is Switzerland's largest airport and offers excellent international connections. From here, a direct train will take you to Interlaken in just over 2 hours.
• Geneva Airport (GVA): Another popular option, with a train ride of around 3 hours to Interlaken.
• Bern Airport (BRN): Although smaller, it is the closest to Interlaken (just an hour by car or train).

Getting to Interlaken by train: the most comfortable option

Switzerland is known for its efficient and punctual rail network, and arriving in Interlaken by train is both a comfortable and scenic experience. The town has two main stations: Interlaken Ost (East) and Interlaken West (West), both well-connected to major Swiss cities.

• From ZurichThe journey takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes, with one change of train in Bern.
• From Geneva: Approximately 3 and a half hours, also with connection in Bern.
• From Lucerne: It will take you to Interlaken in about 2 hours.

Getting to Interlaken by car

If you prefer to drive, Interlaken is accessible via the Autobahn, which connects to major Swiss cities. Keep in mind that you'll need special snow gear at Christmas and a vignette (a mandatory sticker for driving on Swiss motorways, which is now also available online, eliminating the need for a physical copy), which costs CHF 40 and is valid for one year.

I recommend buying it online before you go so you don't have to stop at the border and wait in line. Also, be careful with websites; this is the official one for buying the Swiss e-vignette , unlike others that charge higher prices because they're intermediaries and take a commission.

In addition, parking in the centre can be limited and expensive, so it is recommended to use park-and-ride car parks and travel by public transport.

Where to stay in Interlaken in winter?

Interlaken is one of the best options for sleeping in this whole area. Not only because it is the best place in terms of communication with all the valleys and important tourist towns, but also because its prices are better than in other small tourist towns.

My recommendation is that you stay near the Interlaken Ost train station (where you will catch trains to see Grindelwald and the Top of Europe etc…) and near Höheweg , the main avenue of Interlaken.

For me, without a doubt, the best value for money option is the Interlaken Youth Hostel , which includes breakfast, a shared kitchen, and great rooms. It's right next to the train station but also opposite Harder Kulm , the Interlaken viewpoint. The cogwheel train takes you to the top in just 10 minutes, and the views of Lakes Thun and Brienz with the Alps in the background will leave you speechless.

Without a doubt the best option for family trips with or without children.

What to do and see in Interlaken in Winter and Christmas

A village between two lakes with Christmas charm

As its name suggests, Interlaken is located between two lakes: Thun and Brienz, which in itself gives it a spectacular setting. During Christmas, the town is transformed into a fairy tale with lights and decorations that beautify every corner. Walking through its streets while carols sound and you smell the aroma of Glühwein (mulled wine) is an unforgettable experience.

Interlaken Christmas Market

Interlaken hosts several special events during the holidays, such as its Christmas market, where you can find local products, handmade decorations and delicious Swiss specialties. In addition, the Winterlaken Park, located near the Höhematte, becomes the epicentre of activities such as ice skating, food stalls and workshops for children. However, from 26 December onwards the Christmas market closes its doors and only the decorations remain, which are still very special.

Christmas lights and night shows

One of the most anticipated events in Interlaken during Christmas is the light and fireworks show to bid farewell to the New Year. The combination of the snow-capped mountains, the illuminated sky and the festive atmosphere make this celebration something unique.

The Jungfraujoch: the top of Europe

From Interlaken, you can reach the famous cogwheel train that takes you to the Jungfraujoch, known as the “Top of Europe” , on this organized tour from Interlaken or on your own.

This train journey is an adventure in itself, traversing breathtaking landscapes to reach the highest point in Europe accessible by train, at 3.454 meters above sea level. At the top, a glacial world awaits, complete with stunning viewpoints, an ice cave, and an unforgettable experience for the whole family.

The Jungfraujoch is an experience you can't miss if you're in Interlaken in winter. The cogwheel train, which connects Grindelwald to the highest station in Europe (3.454 meters), is a true marvel of engineering. At the top, you'll find a world of snow and ice that seems otherworldly.

From the observatory you can enjoy incredible views of the Aletsch Glacier, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO , the 4158m Jungfrau peak and many more of the Alps.

The entrance ticket is expensive, more than 120 euros per person, but it includes the Eiger Express, the Jungfraujoch cogwheel train and the experience of a 2-hour tour through an ice cave, 3 viewing points, an interactive video area, different exhibitions, etc.

Skiing and snowboarding for all levels in a 4-sector area

Interlaken is an ideal base for enjoying some of the best ski slopes in Switzerland . From here, you can easily access the Jungfrau Region ski area , which boasts four vast and diverse ski sectors: Grindelwald, Mannlinchen, Wengen, and Mürren, offering options for both beginners and experts. We skied in Grindelwald and Mannlinchen, and it was a unique experience, surrounded by alpine scenery and top-notch service.

From Interlaken, you can easily access one of Switzerland's most spectacular ski areas: the Jungfrau ski region , ideal whether you're a beginner (in the Mannlinchen sector) or an expert looking for a challenge. At the Grindelwald terminal, you can store your skis in lockers for 12 Swiss francs per day if you plan to ski for more than one day—a very convenient option that we found incredibly useful.

The best part: if you're traveling with children, they can ski for free on Saturdays up to and including age 15 , and if you buy a three-day ski pass, you get a 50% discount to go up to the Jungfraujoch, known as the top of Europe . We couldn't pass up that opportunity!

A word of warning for skiers used to the Pyrenees : the slopes in the Swiss Alps are nothing like the Pyrenees or French Alps you might be accustomed to. There are no green runs in Switzerland , and the easiest ones are marked as blue, which in Spain we would mark as red 75% of , so be careful if your skill level is low.

Alternative winter sports

If skiing isn't your thing, there are plenty of other winter activities to enjoy with the family. Try sledging on routes like Bussalp or First, where you can sled down snowy paths while enjoying spectacular views. Or, for something a little more sedate, opt for hiking with snowshoes or just with boots and good crampons.

Winter cruises on the lakes

Lake Thun and Lake Brienz are not only beautiful in summer; in winter, you can also enjoy panoramic cruises that allow you to admire the snowy landscapes from a unique perspective. In addition, many boats are decorated in a Christmas theme, which adds a festive touch to the experience.

Swiss cuisine in a cosy atmosphere

At Christmas, Interlaken's restaurants and hotels bring out the best of Swiss gastronomy. Don't miss a good cheese fondue or raclette while you take shelter from the cold in a warm and cosy atmosphere. And if you fancy something sweet, try Lebkuchen (spiced biscuits) or chocolate pralines, which are a classic of the region.

Japanese Garden: A haven of peace

Just a few steps away from the hustle and bustle of the centre lies the Japanese Garden, a small but charming garden that will make you feel as if you have travelled to another continent. Designed in the traditional Japanese style, this space offers a serene atmosphere with ponds, bridges and perfectly maintained vegetation. It is the ideal place to relax and enjoy a moment of calm.

Casino Kursaal: Classic elegance

Even if you're not a fan of gambling, the Kursaal Casino is a must-see in Interlaken. This stunning historic building is an architectural gem, surrounded by beautiful gardens that invite you to take a leisurely stroll. The casino itself also hosts cultural and musical events, so it's worth checking out their schedule. Right across the street is the city's most beautiful Christmas market and Christmas light decorations.

Harder Kulm: The star viewing point

If you're traveling with children or simply want to enjoy spectacular views, don't miss Harder Kulm, Interlaken's most famous viewpoint. The climb to the top is quite an experience: a cogwheel train will whisk you from the valley to the viewpoint in just 10 minutes. At the top, breathtaking panoramas of Lakes Thun and Brienz await, with the majestic Alps as a backdrop. A true feast for the eyes!

At the viewing point you will also find a restaurant with a spectacular terrace, ideal for enjoying a coffee or a meal while you contemplate the landscape. Children will have fun exploring the walkways and enjoying the fresh mountain air.

Right at the base there is also a small, free zoo for children.

How to get from Interlaken to Grindelwald for skiing and climbing the Top of Europe, Jungfraujoch.

As I know that one of the biggest attractions of Interlaken is to go up to Grindelwald and from there visit the base of the legendary Eiger mountain and take the rack railway to the Top of Europe, I have decided to write this section to give you more details on how to get there from Interlaken.

We visited the Jungfrau Region in 3 days based in Interlaken and we can tell you that it was an excellent choice.

Getting from Interlaken to Grindelwald is very easy. You can take the train from Interlaken Ost station to Grindelwald Terminal to go up to the Top of Europe or to the ski slopes, or simply to Grindelwald to see the village or go to the Grindelwald First ski area.

From Grindelwald Terminal you will find the ticket offices to purchase access to the Top of Europe.

From here you can also access one of Switzerland's most spectacular ski areas: the Jungfrau ski region , ideal especially if you're an expert skier. By the way, there are lockers there where you can leave your skis and equipment; each locker can hold equipment for two people and costs 12 Swiss francs per day.

Practical tips for Interlaken in winter and Christmas

Here are some tips that I think will be useful for your trip.

• Getting around by train: The Swiss rail network is excellent and will allow you to reach all corners without worrying about the car. In addition, the views are a sight to behold.
• Where to sleep: Definitely close to Interlaken Ost train station to be able to go to the ski areas and the Top of Europe and Grindelwald
• Ski equipment: You can rent everything you need at Grindelwald Terminal at the foot of the slopes.
• Combined tickets: Take advantage of discounts on Jungfraujoch and 3-day ski passes that save you money.
• Saturday Free skiing for children under 16 years old.
• Try the crazy gastronomyl: From fondues and raclettes to traditional cakes like Zimtsterne, Bern is a food lover's paradise.
• Take away cash: Although many stalls accept cards, some prefer cash, especially the smaller ones.
• Wear warm clothing, but in layers. The streets are cold, but the premises are well heated.
• Please book accommodation in advance. 
• Buy the Swiss Travel Pass. It is convenient and allows you to move around Switzerland without worrying about individual tickets. 
• Don't forget the camera. The city illuminated at night is spectacular.

My opinion on Interlaken at Christmas and Interlaken in winter

Interlaken is much more than just a place to hang out between two lakes. It's the starting point for incredible adventures and a perfect destination to enjoy winter and snow in Switzerland . If there's one thing I've learned on this trip, it's that everything here is designed to make every day special, from the trains to the ski slopes.

Would I go back? Absolutely! Although maybe next time I'll try something more extreme, like paragliding or cross-country skiing. But in the meantime, this winter trip to Interlaken will remain one of the best experiences I've ever had with my family.
