If you are looking for a destination that mixes good skiing for experts, but also the mixed activities for the entire family, Crans Montana in Switzerland makes it easy for you.
When you think of Switzerland in winter, you probably picture a white paradise of snow-capped mountains, villages lit up by Christmas lights, and snow activities everywhere. Add Crans Montana to the equation and I promise you that the level goes up so much that it almost touches the sky (or at least the peaks of the Alps).
Crans Montana in Switzerland was one of the highlights of my Christmas itinerary in Switzerland, a week-long family trip to Switzerland at Christmas time. Before arriving here, I had visited Bern with its Christmas markets (later I will tell you about my obsession with the mulled wine and melted cheese at these markets), followed by Interlaken, Grindelwald and the Aletsch Arena. But Crans Montana was like the finishing touch to a perfectly wrapped Christmas present thanks to their Chamin des Linternes that they make at Christmas time.
Here is my personal guide, full of advice, anecdotes and a lot of humour, so that you can enjoy this corner of Switzerland to the fullest at Christmas and on this occasion in Crans Montana.

Our route through Switzerland at Christmas: video summary
Our plan? A one-week route, 10 days in total with the round trip, through the Switzerland's most charming Christmas spots: First, the Swiss capital, Bern at Christmas with its various Christmas markets (and the smell of cheese). Then we visited the postcard views of Interlaken and from there, as a base, the various family ski slopes of the Jungfrau Ski Region, such as Grindelwald and Mannlinchen. Next, we visited each other the imposing domain of Aletech Arena on the other side of the Jungfrau, where there are 3 villages that can only be accessed by cable car, which are like a fairy tale. And finally, we go to the cozy and family-friendly Crans-Montana. All this, combining fairytale places, trains and cable cars, and lots of family laughter.
In the links to each place I indicated above, on our route, I will tell you about our entire experience in detail. Access the different posts to get all the information about our route and watch the summary video of our route: https://youtu.be/5szf71TG1S0

Why choose Crans-Montan in Switzerland in winter and especially at Christmas?
Crans Montana is not just a destination for ski, that also if you are a good skier; it is a place where you feel inside a Christmas card.
The views are unreal, with the Matterhorn (my beloved Cervino) and Mont Blanc adorning the horizon.
In addition, here you find the perfect balance between Ski slopes, family activities and apres-ski life which invites you to toast with a nice hot chocolate (or something stronger, we are on vacation) in a town that brings together all the virtues.
Apart from being an ideal place for the whole family due to all the options it has, Crans Montana has something I loved: its Mobility with buses that connect all corners. Buses that are Services staying here.
Finally, I will tell you that Crans Montana at Christmas is a destination that is the icing on the cake for the Chamin des Lanternes which take place throughout December until mid-January. A circuit of lights and live shows in a beautiful lake setting that will leave you in love with this destination every night.

How to get to Crans-Montana
You have several options, either by car or by public transport, which is always great throughout Switzerland.
By train and public transport
One of the wonders of Switzerland is its public transport system. If you're thinking of visiting Crans Montana and don't want to worry about driving, you'll be happy to know that getting there by train and bus is very easy, efficient and even picturesque.
By train to Sierre
The first step to get to Crans Montana is to take the train to Sierre, the nearest town with a train station. Switzerland is served by the SBB (Swiss Railways) train network, which is renowned for its punctuality and comfort. From anywhere in the country, you can take a direct or connecting train to Sierre. For example:
- From Geneva: Approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes by direct train.
- From Zurich: About 2 hours and 30 minutes, with a connection in Visp or Lausanne.
- From Bern: 1 hour and 15 minutes without intermediate stops.
The journey is a delight for the eyes, with alpine landscapes, valleys and charming villages that seem straight out of a fairy tale.
From Sierre to Crans Montana: funicular or bus
Once in Sierre, the options for getting to Crans Montana are equally practical, whether by funicular or by bus.
- Funicular:
This is undoubtedly the most iconic and picturesque way. From Sierre train station, simply follow the signs for the funicular which connects directly to Crans Montana.- Duration: 12 minute climb with spectacular views of the Rhône Valley and the surrounding mountains.
- Frequency: It leaves approximately every 30 minutes.
- Advantages: Not only is it fast, but the views are an experience in themselves. Plus, the funicular station in Crans is just a short walk from the town centre.
- Public bus:
If you prefer to go by road, public buses are also a great option. From Sierre train station, there are regular buses connecting to Crans Montana.- Duration: Around 25-30 minutes depending on traffic.
- Frequency: Several services a day, synchronized with train arrivals.
- Advantages: It allows you to enjoy a panoramic climb, and can be more practical if your accommodation is further away from the centre of Crans Montana, as the buses have many different stops.
SUPER TIP KUCAVANA!
To travel by public transport and save money, we recommend you buy the Swiss Travel Pass which will give you unlimited travel on trains, buses and boats throughout Switzerland. Plus, you'll have access to over 500 museums. Guaranteed huge savings compared to the cost of any journey.

By car
If you prefer to drive to Crans Montana, it is perfectly accessible, although with the snow, You better park the car when you arrive and that's it then you move in the many free buses that the town has if you stay here.
Please note that you will need Special equipment for snow at Christmas y a vignette (mandatory sticker for driving on Swiss motorways, which is currently also online and does not require the physical one), which costs 40 CHF and is valid for one year.
I recommend that you buy it online before you go and forget about having to wait in line at the border. Also be careful with websites, This is the official website to buy the Swiss e-vignette and not others where you will see that the prices are higher because they are intermediaries and they take a commission.
In addition, parking in the centre of small towns in the valley can be limited and expensive, so it is recommended to use park-and-ride car parks and travel by public transport.
If you have to rent a car, a tip is to do it here car rental comparator You will definitely save money thanks to our experience.

Where to sleep in Crans Montana
Crans Montana has many different accommodation options. For those of us who travel as a family, we recommend the apartments or aparthotels, as there are many for skiing in the area and they are really warm and friendly.
The one that has convinced us the most is the Snowpark Apartment which has free cancellation and is in the center next to all the services and cable car, is ideal for a family of 4 like us.
The other slightly cheaper option is the Youth Hostel in Crans Montana, with family rooms, in the centre of Crans Montana, good price and breakfast included, with shared kitchen-dining room.
