A very easy path since it is all downhill so it can be done with the little ones with the help of sleds and shovels, where our 3-year-old toddler made half the way jumping down with the shovel lol. The path starts on the left side of where the sled dogs are and follows the cable car cables and signs with the number 3 of the Font Romeu trail all the time. TIPS FOR THIS ESCAPE TO FONT ROMEU BY MOTORHOME

Generals Font Romeu by motorhome

  • If you are starting out in skiing, Font Romeu is perfect since there is a free access area with two slopes, one with a mechanical mat and the other with a ski lift. If you are already a little more advanced there are many green and blue slopes (they are the majority in this sector) with a ski pass that is expensive.
  • If you want to save over 40 Euros toll from Olesa and from the Cadí tunnel, go on the c-17 and then on the N-260 (Tosas pass). In our case it was only 10 more minutes and for the savings it was worth it. There are curves and it is a mountain road, so if you go through the Tosas pass, always be careful. A tip if you do the collada so that it does not become so heavy is to deviate halfway along the Molina Alp road, it takes the same and the road is better and more entertaining when passing through the Molina tracks. And in winter carry winter chains or wheels always in your car.
  • Plan in advance what you are going to ski to take a 4-hour, 1, 2 or 3-day ski pass that is more expensive than buying it daily, if applicable. There is also a family ski pass. Here you have the prices of this 2019 of Font Romeu, compared to other ski resorts near Barcelona:
  • If you want to take classes, there is a ski school with teachers who speak Catalan and Spanish without problems.
  • At the foot of the slopes where you will park in the Airelle you will also find a restaurant and creperie.
  • In the ski resort there is no store to rent equipment, ski equipment, or snowshoes. If you have to rent equipment, remember to do it before reaching the slopes, on the road and in the previous towns you have stores with more reasonable prices than in Spain (renting rackets will cost you about € 6 when in Spain they are about € 10).
  • On the slopes you have an information point that will give you triptychs and tourist information that you need. There they have a brochure with 6 routes to do with rackets that is very good. From there we extracted route 3 that we have done and which is the easiest to start or do with children, since it is only 3 km and downhill (going up with the gondola which is also a cool experience).
  • 20 minutes from the slopes you have the thermal baths of Dorres, where after skiing you can have a swim in some natural hot water and outdoors at a great price (5 euros adult, 3,5 children from 3 to 11 years old and free children of 3). This time we could not go, but other times we have gone and it is great! Also at the same distance you have those of Sto Tomás and those of Llo, a little more expensive but with indoor pools as well as outdoor pools. It is ideal to go on the Sunday that falls on the way back to make time and not queue on the road. Until 19:30 they are open.
  • In about 20 minutes, you also have the possibility of doing a different activity, visiting the first industrial solar oven built in the world that is located in Odeillo and that offers recreational and pedagogical visits for all ages.
  • Another activity that you can do in the area is to visit Vilafranca del Conflent, a beautiful medieval town where you will find caves like the spectacular Canalettas with a light and music show; Or visit Montluís, another medieval town. And apart from this, another interesting proposal, especially with children, is to go up to the emblematic and old Tren Groc (yellow) that goes high above the entire Pyrenees.

If you travel with children:

  • In Font romeu there is a Snow Garden, Piu-Piu, for the little ones from 3 years old for € 40 there are two hours of skiing. If it is already bigger and it is to perfect the ski, they need forfets, that yes they offer a 2-hour only here for those of the Piu Piu at € 28 the forfet. Remember there are no track rental equipment stores. If you need your little one to rent equipment, do it before reaching the slopes.
  • For the little ones between 18 months to 3 years there is a nursery.
  • For the little ones who want to start skiing, in Font-Romeu there are 2 free slopes, one with a tapestry and one with a ski lift, suitable for the little ones and for anyone.
  • If you like to ski, you will know that the equipment for the little ones is expensive, we apart from buying the clothes in the lidl when the ski goes out which is great, we buy second hand skis and boots in Puigcerdà, in all the sports stores Ski equipment sell second-hand equipment for children and adults. It is a very good option, since every year you take the old equipment and only for € 30, which would already cost you the set-up, they change you to new equipment of their size and with the set-up done. A great option.
  • For those of you who do not like skiing, at the Font Romeu station you can also enjoy the snow in a free sledding area, where there is no conveyor mat, but you will have to go up on foot. There is a large court next to the tubbies (floats) which is worth € 8 per person, and there is another one in front of the free beginners court on the tapestry, smaller.
  • A great proposal for the little ones is to do a route with snowshoes + sleds or shovels. The easiest route that I propose to you is the one that we did, number 3 (it is signposted) that goes from the slopes to the town of Font Romeu, 3 km long and that goes downhill, and then take the cable car that you will love with a Pedestrian pass available for € 6,5. Children under 4 do not pay, but it is very important to carry their ID because without valid documentation they are made to pay equally.
  • Making an igloo based on making the snow with bricks first is a great game to do with the kids in the snow.
  • Making a snowman in the thousand snowy esplanades around the parking lot is a great game for the little ones, take carrots, buttons, a hat and a scarf and make your super pose with the doll!
  • In Font Romeu there is to do dog sledding. Of course, you have to book before. It was all full this weekend. It is mask, about € 45 the child.
  • For the little ones you also have the possibility of doing a different activity, the mini snowmobiles that are for over 5 years with a base cost of € 9 for 8 minutes. These are just behind the parking lot where the motorhomes are, just before reaching the super sled and tubbies track.

If you travel with dogs:

  • Watch out in the parking lot with your dog, the huskies are nearby, although in a fenced fence.
  • Bring your updated dog card, you are in France, they can ask you for it and rabies is mandatory.
  • Remember to point your phone on your dog's collar, outside of Spain the chip will be difficult to locate.
  • You can go to the toboggan runs without problem with your dog.
  • You can go to the snowshoe tracks without problem with your dog, but they will not be able to get on the gondola and chair lifts.

If you travel by motorhome or van:

  • If you are an AC of more than 3m high, remember that you will not be able to take the road parallel to the collada de tosas since there is a tunnel that you do not pass.
  • Wear winter chains or wheels (both better) (see this article that we advise you based on our experience to bring http://www.kucavana.es/neumaticos-de-invierno/),
  • Remember with the cold always put the heating on and leave it even when you leave, also you see putting the water heater so that the water does not freeze.
  • Climb the mountain roads at the time of car up and down the descents, do not complicate yourself, the roads are very narrow with snow especially, although until Font Romeu there are good roads in general.
  • Park at the end of all the Airelles, in front of the entrance to the recreational sledding area, it is the flattest area of the parking lot that allows you to stay overnight. Remember that overnight parking is prohibited in the first parking lot.
  • In the parking lot you have garbage and to recycle packaging. Recycling does not cost anything.
  • We strongly advise you to take a special GPS for a motorhome or truck to put your AC measurements, in these mountain areas you go much more relaxed, it is a rest.
