Generalities about Mallorca in a motorhome

The official language of Mallorca is español although the use of the Majorcan, a dialect variety of Catalan. Due to the large influx of tourists on the island, a large part of the population speaks English and it is also very common for tourist services staff to speak German.

A delicious gastronomy

Balearic gastronomy is an authentic delight forged in the heart of the Mediterranean. You can find flavors of a great diversity and exquisite top quality products such as oil, ensaimada, sobrassada, coca de trempó, cheese, wine, flaó, herbs, sea salt ... all of them linked to the land.

Among the typical dishes of the island you cannot miss the arròs brut. It is a soupy dish that is prepared with meat, typical Mallorcan sausages, such as sobrasada and butifarrón, as well as adding vegetables and mushrooms. How to access Mallorca by motorhome: Ferry

Arriving by sea to Mallorca is quite a spectacle. An excellent option is to enter through the Balearia ferry. We have done it with them and the truth is that it was a great choice for quality, services and price.

You can board in Barcelona, Dénia or Valencia. The round-trip price from Barcelona for two adults and two children traveling by motorhome is around 500 euros, although it will depend a lot on how far in advance you take the tickets.

If you travel with a dog, ferrypetfriendly

They are petfriendly which made it possible for us to travel with our dog Max inside the cabin and not be separated from us the whole way. There was even a bowl of water for him inside the cabin.

For the walks, on deck 9 we had a pipican, where Max socialized. Since he did not do anything else hahaha. He went the whole trip without peeing there. That is why I recommend that before boarding, take him for a walk to do his things in the street. Luckily, it was not the first experience, and so we did.

The night ferry to Mallorca in a motorhome, a good option not to find out about the trip

We took the night ferry from Barcelona to Palma de Mallorca from Baleària, the best option if you are traveling with children and not to find out about the trip.

It left Barcelona at 22:30 p.m., although at 20:30 p.m. we should already be there waiting for boarding. The journey takes about seven hours. We arrive at 6 in the morning and from there to enjoy.

As we were going in a cabin, we were able to sleep the sea of well, well some more than others, that Jose does not like the sea too much lol.

When you arrive at 22:30 pm you can have dinner or directly to bed, they have restaurant service, just like for breakfast. When we go with the children, we have dinner on French time before leaving home.

Infrastructures and services of Mallorca by motorhome

Mallorca It is not an easy island nor a friend of motorhomes and campers, here I leave you already warned. This can be seen only by contemplating the infrastructures and services that it offers us.

We start with the infrastructures:  Neither a campsite nor any motorhome area with services and overnight stays throughout the island, neither public nor private.

And it is that there are no regulations for motorhome areas and the Insular Council for the moment has not wanted to give any permission to private parties or to any City Council that has tried, the last Pollença.

Roads and accessibility in Mallorca by motorhome

Mallorca is made up of a total of 205 roads which add up to 1.578,28 km. Most of the roads that exist on the island are conventional, 201, totaling 1.483,68 km. In addition, the island has 4 high-capacity roads 94,6 km that reinforce communication on the island (according to data from the Consell de Mallorca, 2021).

In general, they are cwide two-way roads with hard shoulder to move from one municipality to another. Of course, to always access the coastal part, as a general rule, you go along narrow two-way roads, without markings or hard shoulder. In high season it must be crazy, since a motorhome and car do not pass if one does not stop and maneuver something. In addition, we have seen that cars tend to park on those roads in high season, which will add insanity in July and August for sure.

Finally, point out that along the Serra de la Tramontana you must be clear that they are not narrow but they do not have a shoulder many times and they have many curves.

Emptying and filling of water services in Mallorca for motorhomes

We only have one clean point in Palma to empty and fill water from 8 to 20 hours and another point at a gas station Repsol of Son Servera. That's all and without being able to spend the night.

Overnight parking signposted in Mallorca for motorhomes

As specific overnight places for motorhomes, we only find a few car parks without services that can be counted on with one palm of the hand (for example, Son Servera or Son Serra de la Marina town hall).

The most common thing we will visit on the island are car parks without much charm shared with other cars and camping is never allowed. About these car parks in general you should know that they are small in most tourist towns, which complicates accessibility and parking a lot in high season. Therefore, remember, do not go in July and August, we totally discourage it, avoid problems.

Majorca law for motorhomes: a lot of vigilance against camping

Specific regulations on motorhomes are non-existent on the island, a lagoon that is only covered by the general legislation of Spain.

Thus, If a municipality does not prohibit parking and / or overnight motorhomes by ordinance, we can park and spend the night without problem, as long as we do not leave the parking marks and do not camp (this is very important).

Prohibitions on parking in Mallorca in a motorhome, sometimes, and always camping!

On the other hand, there are many municipalities on the island that veto us from parking on their streets. Unfortunately, we are not very well received, not even by the Island Tourist Board that we called before coming and they literally told us, «You cannot come, there are no infrastructures for you and we do not agree with this type of tourism in the island". Obviously, our freedom of movement is a constitutional right, and almost like a tantrum, we decided to come.

What is Forbidden, and this is by law, on the island is camping, as in all of Spain. We cannot camp anywhere on the island. Not even in private places, since there is no camping or any private motorhome area, which is where we could camp in the rest of Spain.

And remember, that camping is spending more than 72 hours in the same place or going outside the perimeter of the vehicle (opening a simple window, taking out the awning or taking out the table and chairs is camping).

Advice to avoid camping with heat in Mallorca in a motorhome or camper

That is why a tip if you come in summer, come with autonomous air conditioning or an autonomous Viesa-type refrigerator so as not to open windows or take anything out and thus avoid all kinds of fines while also being cool in your camper or motorhome. For us, God Viesa is everything 🙂 It should come standard and not be an extra, we always say it, so surely many would stop camping and stop us from banning unique places.

Es Trenc by motorhome

The best time to come to Mallorca by motorhome or camper: low season

Clearly late May, June, September and early OctobereIt is the best time of the year if what you want is to bathe on the beaches. There are no crowds, although there are people beginning and it makes it easier to move around as well as park and spend the night without problems.

Of course, don't even think about coming in July and August, it must be crazy. The island is small, it is crowded those months and only with cars everything is full and inaccessibility increases. The motorhomes on the island ask us to clarify this. Do not come in July and August for the good of all, there is no specific infrastructure for motorhomes and here everything collapses.

Now, as we told you above, the Viesa or an air conditioner with autonomy should be mandatory to come in summer In a motorhome or camper, since the heat and not having camping places, make the issue complicated to make life inside the motorhome or camper. With the Viesa we do not open a window in the heat of the heat wave. Viesa does not give us commission eh hehehe but really if we want to be karacoles this extra is one of our recommendations to avoid infractions in summer.

Yes, you just want to enjoy the peace and landscapes of this island winter, autumn and spring the great option. Without overcrowding and with tranquility.

You can enjoy art, music and theater. It is, without a doubt, an exciting destination. In the center of Palma you can visit the weekly organic food market, which takes place every Tuesday and Saturday.

Through the Sierra de la Tramuntana

[02] Valldemossa by motorhome

Discover Valldemossa, one of the most visited towns on the island of Mallorca. You can get to this lovely place mountain of the Serra de Tramuntana through an ascending and sinuous but well accessible road. This stone village is surrounded by an inspiring landscape that has attracted artists such as the Polish composer Frederic Chopin and his lover, the writer George Sand in 1838 or also to Unamuno, Rubén Darío or Azorín. The cute townhouses that line the streets are quaint and although small on the outside, they often feature a unique garden and flower-filled areas. Valldemossa is a quiet place although in the summer months the town experiences a strong increase in tourists and with them, the bustling atmosphere.

The circular hike up the popular El Teix mountain will take you through the forest and relax you with fabulous views of the coastline. Immerse yourself in the perfume of the Mediterranean flora.

The port and coast of Valldemosa

15 minutes by motorhome from the center of town you reach Port de Valldemossa, a small hidden and picturesque port. Challenging landscape attracts hikers and cyclists In search of emotions, in a motorhome there is very little parking and we prefer not to go.

And if what you like are the viewpoints over the Mediterranean SeaDo not miss the Mirador de s'Escaleta or the Finca Mirador and the iconic rock formation of Sa Foradada, you will find it on the way to Deia, the parking is small so in July and August we do not think there is room.

What to see

Cartuja, Via Blanquerna, Port, Hermitage of the Santísima Trinidad and Mirador de Sas Puntes.

What to do

Tours through the alleys, eating the famous Valldemosa potato coca with an almond slush, tours, hiking, extreme activities and excursions along the coast.

Where to park and spend the night in a motorhome

There are different paid car parks during the day (2 euros 1 hour), free at night, at the entrance of the municipality on the right hand side and if you are very long like us in the street of the second car park on the right at the end there are wide horizontal places if you go in low season.

Follow your heart and let Deià inspire you.

Its honey-colored stone houses, its beautiful winding streets and a mountainous and almost idyllic setting make this town a very coveted place especially by wealthy people.

Thereafter, the town began to attract a steady stream of creators and quickly earned its reputation as home to a thriving community of artists and musicians. The bohemian spirit is still present.

Deià's excellent reputation has made the town a must-see for many tourists, who enjoy its famous restaurants, of numerous paths between pine trees and of a small and picturesque cove.

There is always something new to explore in Deià!.

What to see

Its stone streets, Robert Graves House, archaeological museum, the church of Juan Bautista, Son Marroig, beaches and coves.

What to do

Hiking, routes, excursions, walks, visits to small coves, gastronomic tastings and cultural events.

Where to park and spend the night in a motorhome

At the entrance of the municipality on the same road is the only place to park and we advise against spending the night due to the inclination and location. There is really very little parking in Deia, so in July and August it will be very difficult to access.

[04] The Sóller Valley by motorhome

Visit Sóller and you will feel that it is one of those island towns that seem to live in another era without giving up modern comforts. Enjoy a stay in Sóller and you will be enveloped by its incredible natural environment, its history and its well-known community spiritIt really is a town town, one of those who charge the town one thing and the outsiders another totally lol. The trace of the successful citrus trade can be seen in the modernist buildings and in the great Baroque church. Sitting proudly in the main square, Sant Bartomeu greets the comings and goings of local people and tourists.

Maritime trade reached its peak more than two centuries ago and today draws attention for its  abundant extensions of citrus and olive groves as well as its fertile soil that produces spectacular crops and flowers. Plus, the sparkling Mediterranean Sea is just a 10-minute drive away.

Sóller is a place made for a walk. The narrow alleys that surround the main square encourage you to take time to meander among the small shops. Very interesting people from different parts of the world live here.

It is surprising that it is located between the two largest Mallorcan slopes, which provides a notable verticality to its sides. To the west is the Puig Mayor, with 1445 meters. On the other side, the Puig Massanella, with 1364.

In the Plaza del Carmen is the church of the Mare de Déu del Carme, in honor of the patron saint of sailors.

There are also excursions to nearby national parks. Finally, very close in Manacor you have the Rafa Nadal museum.

To see the Coves del Drach you can park in their parking lot, now they close it with the last shift, so we recommend you park in the parallel street in front of the Coves which is shaded by tall pines and is wide and flat.

[14] Campos, the Parc Natural Marítim Terrestre is Trenc-Salobrar by motorhome

The town of Campos

Campos is loved for its rural splendor and magnificent beaches.

This municipality preserves much of the old Mallorcan charm, with its winding streets and traditional stone buildings. The oldest records of Campos date back to 1300 AD, when the town was founded by King James II, around Roman settlements.

In this charming place, several historical buildings remain, such as the church of Sant Julià, which houses the famous painting of Christ painted by Murillo. There are also exhibitions in the Sister María Rafaela museum and in the church of San Julián.

Es Trenc-Salobrar Natural Park

Most of the attractions in Campos are natural. The town has good access to national parks, forests and mountains and to the famous es Trenc beach with its salt flats. This sandy beach with crystal clear waters is almost unexploited. Many have compared its beauty to the turquoise waters of the Caribbean. In addition, there is a nudist hole.

Do not forget to visit the Salobrar de Campos, a rewarding experience that on the hottest days, you can end with a relaxing dip in the crystal clear waters of Es Trenc beach.

It is about 10 minutes from Cala de Ses Covetes and a very cool beach bar area and 15-20 from Es Trenc. In Campos we parked in front of a supermarket at the entrance.

[15] Llucmajor, Cala Pi by motorhome

If you are looking for an authentic place to breathe the traditional Mallorcan culture, it will be difficult to beat what Llucmajor offers.

Llucmajor

This attractive place emerges between fields of almond and apricots. In addition, it has a very powerful story. After a rich past in agriculture and stone, iron and wood crafts, during the XNUMXth century it became the shoe mecca, producing brands like Farrutx and Yanko. The 1950s marked the birth of tourism.

The town designed like a large chessboard is home to beautiful architecture. Without a doubt, the heart of Llucmajor is located in the Spain Square. The triangular shape of the square is lined with trees that provide a beautiful shade.

Talayotic archaeological site of Capocorb Vell

Here is the oldest settlement in Mallorca, the Talayotic site of Capocorb Vell. It is also the first region of the island in which the Romans planted vineyards, whose wine was recognized as the best of the Roman Empire.

Vi Rei Winery, Guided Train Tour and Wine Tasting

Experience Little train, guided tour and wine tasting At Bodegas Vi Rei we loved doing it with children. You travel through the largest vineyards in the Balearic Islands in an emblematic train and during the journey, you receive information about the most important varieties, both local and international. In addition, they explain the annual cycle of the vine and its cultivation, where you will see farm animals such as sheep and also deer. You then enjoy a guided tour of the production. In it, you will get to know the fermentation room, the barrel room and the bottling area, to finish in the wine tasting room. A tasting of 8 wines accompanied by an aperitif of km 0, even the sobrasada is produced by them. Impressive!

Cala Pi

Finally, Cala Pi emerges as one of the best beaches in the area, although it is so small and with so little parking that it will be difficult to park, in addition to where we parked the restaurant in front, it asked us to leave because we blocked the views of its clients ... I'm saying no more ...

What to see

Cala Pi, Town Hall in Plaza España, Church of San Miguel, Claustre de St Bonaventura, colonial-style buildings and the weekly market and the Talayotic Village Capocorb Vell.

What to do

Hiking, biking, bathing and the experience of a guided tour and wine tasting at Vi Rei Wineries.

Where to park and spend the night in a motorhome

To park in Cala Pi there is a small parking lot in front of the viewpoint that if you go late you can be lucky and find a place like us (we arrived at 7 in the morning!). There you can also spend the night. To see the Talayotic town and the Vi Rei wineries, they have parking in front of them and if you ask for sure they will not put you in trouble overnight, the only thing is that the wineries close their doors at night.
