Why Namibia in a 4x4 with a tent?

There are many fascinating destinations, but few offer what Namibia does: adventure, wildlife, safety, reasonable distances, and the possibility of exploring it independently. And if you're traveling with children, that balance between freedom and control is invaluable.

Is it expensive to travel to Namibia? Compared to other African destinations, Namibia isn't cheap, but it's not a must-visit luxury destination either. If you travel independently, stay in campsites, and cook some of your own meals, you can keep your budget fairly under control. 

Now, if you thought it would be cheaper than traveling around Europe… well, nope… in the end it costs the same as traveling in a rented motorhome or campervan and going to campsites as traveling around Europe…

Namibia isn't cheap, but it's not inaccessible either. It's not a budget destination, but if you travel independently you can keep a close eye on expenses and have an experience that can easily become much more expensive on an organized tour.

Is it possible to travel cheaper? Tricks to save money without sacrificing experience

Yes, it's possible. Namibia isn't a budget destination, but there are plenty of ways to stick to a budget without sacrificing quality or adventure . Here are the tricks we used during our 22-day trip.

Traveling outside of peak season

Between June and October (southern winter), the weather is ideal and wildlife is easier to spot, but it's also peak season and prices rise : flights, rentals, and campsites become more expensive. If you can travel between March and May or in November, you'll save money without sacrificing good weather.

Compare 4x4 rental prices and reduce extras

The 4x4 with a tent is the heart of the trip and undoubtedly the biggest expense. Compare several companies and book well in advance, as prices fluctuate based on supply and demand. Make sure it includes all camping equipment, comprehensive insurance (we broke a window, which is very common on unpaved tracks with loose stones), and roadside assistance options, like the satellite phone rental we opted for, so we'd have something to call with if needed (there's no coverage on half the roads, or more).
We opted for a vehicle with two tents on the roofIdeal for traveling with children, and with a hard cover, which is perfect for easy assembly and disassembly. We also opted for an automatic vehicle and the newest model possible to avoid roadside repairs. This didn't lower the cost; on the contrary, if you want to reduce expenses, you'll have to cut back on some of these features. If it's worth it to reduce extras and features, you can save up to €1500 on the 4x4; that's where you'll save the most on the trip.

Book campsites outside of natural parks

A very effective way to save is Do not sleep inside national parksespecially in places like Etosha, where prices skyrocket.
For example, inside the park, the cheapest campsite cost us €75, while just 60 km away, outside the park, we found a newer campsite with better amenities for only €40 per night.
In addition, many of these outdoor campsites are in equally beautiful settings and allow early entry to the park the next day.

Cook yourself

Although supermarkets are not particularly cheap, Cooking yourself greatly reduces daily expenses. compared to eating out.
A package of pasta costs about €1, bread and fruit are reasonably priced, and you can find a variety of products (including gluten-free bread or European products in cities like Windhoek or Swakopmund).
A dinner at a restaurant without drinks (which are not usually included) costs around €15 per person.
Cooking at the campsite can reduce food costs by more than half and also allow you to enjoy the famous Namibian "braai" (barbecues) that almost all campsites have.

Our final budget (real and unfiltered): opinion

You've already seen it in the table, but here's some context and my impressions. Our trip lasted 24 days in total, with 22 days spent exploring Namibia.

What was the most expensive thing?

• 4x4 rental with tent and full insurance: €4.300, without this there is no trip and yes we could have saved more and rented one for €3000, not automatic, older, with fewer extras...but for us it was important not to have risks or surprises on the route and we preferred not to go to restaurants so much and spend more here for example.
  
• Intercontinental flights€2.900 (we booked well in advance and with reasonable layovers: just one in Munich). We flew with Lufthansa and everything went well, and we considered €700 per person a reasonable price.
  
• Guided toursWe did some must-sees, like Sandwich Harbour, which alone cost €450. Very expensive, yes, but I think it was one of the things that impressed us most on this trip; we would definitely do it again.
  

And the cheapest option?

• Sleeping: mainly between campsites and camping areas, we spent Less than €100 per night on average for the 4 of us. And this average includes 7 nights we slept in lodges/apartments, some of them very, very top-notch and cool.
  
• Eating out: we cooked most days, so our restaurant expenses were low (€250 in total). This is where we saved the most.

 Would we do it again?

Absolutely. It's not a cheap trip, but the cost-to-experience ratio is outstanding. Namibia offered us a level of freedom, adventure, and natural beauty that's hard to match, and the fact that we did it as a family makes it priceless.
