Our recent experience arriving at Gatwick as a family

On our last trip to London, which we described in detail in our guide to London in 3 days with children , we landed at Gatwick at 23:30 pm.

And honestly, at that moment we were very clear that we didn't want to complicate our lives.

The four of us were traveling with two children after a long day of travel and with little desire to start looking for trains, platforms or connections at that time.

That's why we pre-booked a private transfer.

And it was, without a doubt, one of the great logistical successes of the trip.

As soon as we left the terminal, the driver was waiting for us with our name on a sign.

Punctual.

No calls.

No waiting.

Without wasting a single minute.

We simply picked up our suitcases and went straight to the hotel.

Furthermore, since four people were traveling, the price difference compared to the train wasn't as great as we might initially think.

And honestly, the comfort, the time saved, and the peace of mind more than made up for it.

The experience was so good that we did exactly the same thing on the way back.

Our flight was leaving very early and we had to leave the hotel around 7 am.

So we booked the transfer the day before.

At the agreed time the driver was waiting at the hotel door.

Without stress.

No surprises.

Without depending on train schedules or carrying luggage through stations first thing in the morning.

And once again we arrived at the airport without any problems.

After this last trip, our conclusion is quite clear:

If you're traveling alone or looking to save as much as possible, the train is still an excellent option.

But if several of you are traveling, especially as a family, it's well worth comparing prices because the economic difference is often less than it seems and the comfort gained is enormous.

Travel time

The journey usually takes around 30 minutes to Victoria Station, making it one of the fastest ways to get to the city center.

Advantages

• Very easy to use for those visiting London for the first time.

• It connects to Victoria Station, one of the best-connected stations in the city.

Drawbacks

• It is the most expensive rail option.

Our opinion: It's an excellent option if you're staying near Victoria or particularly value comfort, but for most travelers there are much better value alternatives.

Thameslink: the best value for money

If you're looking for a balance between price, speed and comfort, Thameslink is often one of the best options for getting from Gatwick to London.

Unlike the Gatwick Express, it does not end at Victoria Station, but travels through central London, making stops at some of the city's most important stations.

Price

It is usually cheaper than the Gatwick Express.

That's why it's often one of the preferred alternatives for many travelers who want to save money without sacrificing a comfortable and fast journey.

Travel time

Depending on the destination station, the journey usually takes between 30 and 45 minutes.

The difference compared to the Gatwick Express is usually quite small.

Southern Railway

On paper it may seem like a great idea.

And in some cases it really is.

But it's important to know both its advantages and limitations before making a decision.

When is it worth it?
