A getaway to Extremadura in a motorhome

Our proposal

We suggest you spend a few days in Extremadura in a motorhome. We have chosen a region that will bring you great surprises. Guadalupe is located within its territory, cataloged as One of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain. But on the other hand, it is an area that is a great unknown for many.

It is not overcrowded

Fortunately, this region attracts more and more travelers and curious about its natural wealth. The best? It is not overcrowded. Although there is an exception with Guadalupe on certain days of the year for religious celebrations, September 8 and October 12, mainly).

The natural enclave is recognized as the Villuercas Ibores Jara Geopark. It has the privilege of treasuring a great wealth of fauna that attracts fans of both birds and flora.

Own microclimate

The area has its own microclimate and, therefore, we can find various rare species in Europe. Another of the charms of the place are the so-called “Geosites”. What are they? Well, a series of points of special geological interest distributed throughout the Geopark, which can offer a great experience for motorhomes since they are spread over several towns. Some are located near the main roads and others allow easy access on foot from parking areas or viewpoints.

What to see and where to stop

If you have a few days, such as a bridge, these are the places that we recommend you visit to fully enjoy Extremadura by motorhome.

Guadalupe: Royal Monastery of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Dare to stroll through its streets and discover the upper area of the town as well as the surroundings of the Fuente de los Tres Chorros. In addition, you must include in your tour the impressive viaduct that is on the outskirts of town. As we say, being one of the Most Beautiful Towns in Spain, it is well worth getting lost in all its corners. It is a wonderful experience.

Villuercas Peak

It is the highest point in the Montes de Toledo. At its top there is an old military base. You can access the helipad and from up there there are incredible views of the Geopark. From this amazing place you can contemplate Guadalupe, Navezuelas and the Cañamero reservoir.

Several viewpoints to marvel you

The uphill road has been conditioned in 2020 and several viewpoints have been created where you can even spend the night. Information panels have been installed in areas of geological interest and at the beginning of the road up to the peak you can visit the Ermita del Humilladero. It is a hermitage that fans of reading will like to visit since there are historical data that Miguel de Cervantes visited it.

Although we have not tried it, we believe that it is not a good option to climb to the top of the whole with a motorhome. We would recommend reaching a maximum of the concrete track that goes to Navezuelas, since there is a flat area where you can turn around well, and climb the rest on foot (about 2 km). The top is a cul-de-sac in which there is no esplanade to park, so if there are several cars, a large vehicle may have trouble turning around ... maybe not but we prefer to warn.

Canamero

There you meet him Geopark visitor reception center. As you can imagine, it is the point where you can receive any type of information about the region. And on the outskirts of town we can come across the Cueva Chiquita, a shelter full of well-preserved cave paintings and with very easy access, next to the natural pool of La Nutria, an ideal place to go in summer, just like the Cancho del Fresno Reservoir.

Achievement

In this place, you should not miss the Costanaza Mine that has been rehabilitated to allow your visit. It has an interpretation center where the history of the mine and its importance in the economy of the time are explained.

In addition, you can tour the interior of the mine. If you travel with children, do not miss it because in the end you can get on a little train. The whole group gets on and leaves the mine on the train. It's about 100 meters but ... it makes the little ones a lot of hope.

Chestnut of Ibor

The Castañar de Ibor cave is a unique natural monument due to the state of conservation and the formation of its stalactites and stalagmites. You can visit the cave's interpretation center throughout the year. But the cave has very limited access, only a few months a year, in groups of a maximum of 5 people and by prior appointment that must be requested via the web.

Castle Cabins

This is a very very small town with a ruined castle that offers amazing Incredible views. You do not miss the hype!

And for eat...?

To eat there is a wide gastronomic offer throughout the area. eye! We do not have any specific interest in any specific restaurant but we do give you our personal recommendations.

Canamero

If you are looking for a unique experience, without a doubt, we suggest the Algo Así restaurant in Cañamero. It must be booked well in advance, it has a single price for dinner and it does not have a menu. When you book, they ask you about the foods that you cannot eat or do not like, and based on that they prepare the food for you. The truth is that it is a very pleasant gastronomic experience. Of course, the best thing is to go without having eaten all day, because the amount is enormous.

On the other hand, in a more economical way in Cañamero we recommend Mesón Ruecas, which has good cuisine and good prices. Also the Taberna del Ruecas, which serves some  very good pizzas that are known throughout the region.

Guadalupe

In Guadeloupe you should not stop eating a tapa of blood sausage, which little by little in recent years has become a ritual. When we recommend places to eat, we tell you the Posada del Rincón in the square or the Bar Chipi which is a few meters away.

Where to sleep?

As for the overnight stay, although there are many places to park and spend the night throughout the area, we give you some.

For us, the most quiet and central with respect to the rest of the towns is Cañamero, There is no area enabled but you can spend the night at N 39º 23 '7 ”W 5º 23' 34” or at N 39º 23 '10 ”W 5º 23' 36”

En Guadalupe There is an area in the urban area in front of a gas station at N 39º 27 '7 ”W 5º 19' 50” and also a campsite at N 39º 26 '28 ”W 5º 18' 58”

On the ascent to Villuerca Peak there are some viewpoints where you can park and spend the night.

En Achievement there is an area at N 39º 19 '55 ”W 5º 28' 50”

En Chestnut from Ibor there is also a campsite at N 39º 38 '11 ”W 5º 25' 23”

Extremadura in a motorhome ... a highly recommended getaway !!
