A getaway to Extremadura in a motorhome
Our proposal
We suggest spending a few days in Extremadura in a motorhome. We've chosen a region that will hold some great surprises for you . Within its territory lies Guadalupe, listed as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain . But on the other hand, it's an area that remains largely unknown to many.
It is not overcrowded
Fortunately, this region is attracting more and more travelers and visitors thanks to its natural beauty. The best part? It's not overcrowded. (Although there is an exception in Guadalupe on certain days of the year for religious celebrations, mainly September 8th and October 12th).
The natural enclave is recognized as the Villuercas Ibores Jara Geopark . It boasts a wealth of fauna that captivates both birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.
Own microclimate
The area has its own microclimate and, therefore, we can find various rare species in Europe. Another of the charms of the place are the so-called “Geosites”. What are they? Well, a series of points of special geological interest distributed throughout the Geopark, which can offer a great experience for motorhomes since they are spread over several towns. Some are located near the main roads and others allow easy access on foot from parking areas or viewpoints.
What to see and where to stop
If you have a few days, such as a bridge, these are the places that we recommend you visit to fully enjoy Extremadura by motorhome.
Guadalupe: Royal Monastery of Our Lady of Guadalupe
Take a stroll through its streets and discover the upper part of the village, as well as the area around the Fuente de los Tres Chorros (Fountain of the Three Jets). You should also include the impressive viaduct on the outskirts of the village in your itinerary. As we mentioned, being one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain, it's well worth getting lost in all its corners. It's a wonderful experience.
Villuercas Peak
It's the highest point in the Montes de Toledo mountain range. A former military base sits atop it. The helipad is accessible, and from there you'll enjoy incredible views of the Geopark. From this breathtaking vantage point, you can see Guadalupe, Navezuelas, and the Cañamero reservoir.
Several viewpoints to marvel you
The access road was improved in 2020, and several viewpoints have been created where overnight stays are even possible. Information panels have been installed in areas of geological interest, and at the start of the road leading up to the peak, visitors can explore the Hermitage of Humilladero. This hermitage will be of interest to book lovers, as there is historical evidence that Miguel de Cervantes visited it.
Although we haven't tried it, we don't think it's a good idea to drive all the way to the top in a campervan. We recommend going no further than the paved road to Navezuelas, as that's a flat area where you can easily turn around, and then walking the rest of the way (about 2 km). The summit is a dead end with no parking area, so if there are several cars, a large vehicle might have trouble turning around… perhaps not, but we thought we'd mention it.
Canamero
There you'll find the Geopark's visitor center . As you can imagine, it's the place to get all kinds of information about the region. And just outside the village, you can find Cueva Chiquita, a rock shelter full of well-preserved cave paintings and easily accessible, next to the La Nutria natural pool, an ideal spot to visit in summer, as is the Cancho del Fresno Reservoir.
Achievement
While you're here, don't miss the Costanaza Mine , which has been restored and is open to the public. It features an interpretation center that explains the mine's history and its importance to the local economy.
You can also explore the inside of the mine . If you're traveling with children , don't miss it because at the end you can hop on a little train . The whole group gets on and leaves the mine on the train. It's about 100 meters long, but the little ones love it.
Chestnut of Ibor
The Castañar de Ibor cave is a unique natural monument due to its state of preservation and the formation of its stalactites and stalagmites . The cave's interpretation center can be visited year-round. However, access to the cave itself is very limited, only for a few months of the year, in groups of no more than five people, and by prior appointment that must be requested online.
Castle Cabins
This is a very, very small village with a ruined castle that offers incredible views. You can't miss it!
And for eat...?
There's a wide variety of restaurants to choose from in the area. Please note: we don't have any particular preference for any specific restaurant, but we do offer our personal recommendations.
Canamero
If you're looking for a unique experience, we highly recommend the Algo Así restaurant in Cañamero. You should book well in advance, as there's a fixed price for dinner and no menu. When you reserve, they ask you about any dietary restrictions or preferences, and they prepare your meal accordingly. It 's truly a delightful culinary experience. However, it's best to go on an empty stomach, as the portions are enormous.
On the other hand, for a more economical option in Cañamero, we recommend Mesón Ruecas, which has good food and good prices. Also worth trying is Taberna del Ruecas, which serves excellent pizzas that are famous throughout the region.
Guadalupe
In Guadalupe, you absolutely must try a tapa of morcilla (blood sausage ), which has gradually become a local tradition in recent years. If we're recommending places to eat, we suggest Posada del Rincón in the main square or Bar Chipi, which is just a few meters away.
Where to sleep?
As for the overnight stay, although there are many places to park and spend the night throughout the area, we give you some.
For us, the quietest and most centrally located town compared to the others is Cañamero. There is no designated area, but you can stay overnight at N 39º 23' 7” W 5º 23' 34” or at N 39º 23' 10” W 5º 23' 36”
In Guadalupe there is an area in the town center opposite a gas station at N 39º 27' 7” W 5º 19' 50” and also a campsite at N 39º 26' 28” W 5º 18' 58”
On the way up to Pico Villuerca there are some viewpoints where you can park and spend the night.
In Logrosán there is an area at N 39º 19' 55” W 5º 28' 50”
In Castañar de Ibor there is also a campsite at N 39º 38' 11” W 5º 25' 23”
Extremadura in a motorhome ... a highly recommended getaway !!
