Practical guide to travel to Galicia by motorhome

Galician legislation for motorhomes and campers: vigilance against camping on the coast and protection of natural landscapes

The legislation is the same as the Spanish state in Galicia.

If a municipality does not prohibit us by ordinance from parking and / or overnighting of motorhomes, we can park and spend the night without problem, as long as we do not leave the parking marks and do not camp (this is very important).

Bans on parking / spending the night in Galicia in a motorhome, sometimes, and always camping!

In some points of mainly coastal municipalities, they veto us parking and spend the night in their streets. Unfortunately, this is the result of the abuse of many who have camped where they should not. The most prohibitions are to spend the night in motorhomes, especially in car parks on the coast, in the interior there is no problem as a general rule.

What is extremely forbidden, and this is by law for all of Spain, it is camping. We cannot camp in any public place.

And remember, that camping is spending more than 72 hours in the same place or going outside the perimeter of the vehicle (opening a simple window, taking out the awning or taking out the table and chairs is camping).

Advice to avoid camping with heat in Galicia in a motorhome or camper

Advice if you come in summer: come with autonomous air conditioning or a Viesa-type refrigerator autonomous so as not to open windows or take anything out and be able thus avoiding all kinds of fines about camping. Being, also, cool in your camper or motorhome. For us, the Viesa God is everything 🙂 He should come as standard and not be an extra, we always say it, this way surely many would stop camping and they would stop prohibiting us from unique places.

This is an alert
Do not camp under any circumstances! It depends on all of us to be able to enjoy the places that still allow us to park and spend the night.
REMEMBER, CAMPING IS EXCEEDING THE PERIMETER OF YOUR VEHICLE (take out table and chairs, awning, open windows, stay in the same place for more than 72 hours...).
To camp you can go to private areas or campsites.

Where to spend the night in Galicia in a motorhome, camp and do services

Galicia It has many campsites and many motorhome areas, some public and many others private.

Campsites and private motorhome areas in Galicia

There are many options in Galicia in different destinations to find campsites and private motorhome areas at a good price.

These two places are where We must go if we want to camp, have maximum security and comfort (take out table, chairs, awning, open windows...). Campsites and private areas are the only ones that allow us to camp.

Public motorhome areas

There are many municipalities that have also opted to establish public motorhome areas in Galicia. The mostly free areas.

But remember that Camping is generally prohibited in these public areas.. Here you can spend the night without disturbing anyone and you can do services; however, do not camp as a general rule.

Gas stations and supermarkets that offer services to motorhomes and campers in Galicia

There are some Galician gas stations and supermarkets that provide water emptying and filling services for motorhomes and campers. Some points even allow overnight stays, but never camping.

Our travel experience to Galicia in a motorhome: the best and worst

The best of Galicia andA motorhome has been…

  • Nature combined with bathing in coves with transparent and wild waters.
  • Galician gastronomy, good and in abundance at a good price! We will not forget the walk along the Vigo estuary and its mussel tasting!
  • An excellent tranquility and security that you breathe
  • All major roads are free, tolls are exceptional
  • Visit the Cie Islandss only accessible by boat that you must reserve well in advance, brutal!
  • The incredible areas of existing private motorhomes in Galicia, with all the services on the beach and at a very good price.
  • The archaeological sites and thermal baths of Galicia.

For us worst This trip to Galicia in a motorhome has been….

  • The complications in some coves to access and park the motorhome. At some points there is too much overcrowding.
  • That on the ship of the Cíes Islands they do not allow dogs to be carried
  • The prohibitions to stay overnight at some points
  • Observing people camped where they shouldn't, which will one day make that place banned. that one day it may ruin our freedom for all of us
  • See so many beaches and places of interest with “no dogs”
  • That it's over so fast! 😛

    1. Kucavanera family

Hello. We do not see well where you mean about this error. It is surely in this paragraph «On your route through Galicia in a motorhome, you cannot leave the province without visiting its capital: A Coruña.» It refers to the capital of the province of La Coruña. It is this?

Hello, we are 2 adults, 2 children (4 and 6 years old) and a dog (Golden Retriever). We would like to do this route at the end of August. Will we have problems visiting the beaches and others with the dog? Any solution besides not visiting them? Thanks.

    1. Kucavanera family

Well, Bego depends on the beach and the area, each municipality makes its ordinances and they keep changing with this covid issue every day. If it is forbidden, we advise you to turn around but you will be fined. In addition, we always recommend that you go to specific motorhome areas and parking lots so it will always be easier and you will not find surprises.
