Tips for this getaway

  • Winter and early spring They are the best times of the year to go if you do not want crowds or want to pay parking
  • Fall the best time if you want to see the Fageda d'en Jordà with its maximum expression of color.
  • Summer if what you want is a good bath in the refreshing pools of the Vall d'Hostoles

1 Visit Sant Feliu de Pallarols. You will be surprised by its old town. It is a beautiful town! Stroll along the river bank enjoying its scenery.

Next, on an affordable excursion you have the Sant Marc volcano to visit and within 15-20 minutes the entire volcanic area of Santa Pau with which you have just completed a great weekend (see the post on Santa Pau, medieval, magical and lunar getaway).

2 As essential to this getaway to La Garrotxa by motorhome, we suggest you do the ruta of Sant Feliu de Pallarols a les Planes d'Hostoles by bike or walking on the greenway of Carrilet.

It is a route with little unevenness and a round trip of just under 12 km. You will find a beautiful landscape of rivers, mountains, tunnels, wooden bridges and stone walls. It is a suitable route for all kinds of physical conditions.

Upon arrival at Les Planes d'Hostoles there are several restaurants with menus at a good price (€ 12-16 weekend). In the middle of the town there is a small supermarket.  Especially carry chains to tie the bikes, water, food and stopping to hike and enjoy the area.

3 Take away swimsuit and booties to this getaway to La Garrotxa by motorhome. If it is good, you will have many possibilities of bathing in the multiple pools of water of the Plans d'Hostoles

In the river that goes along the Carrilet road or in the gorga del Poetí (where you can see otters with luck), you will not have to get out of the way of the Carrilet. La Gorga del Poetí is just at the entrance to les Planes d'Hostoles, before reaching the old train station. You just have to go down a few stairs and you can take a good bath.
The Gorí d'en Murris gorga is a 25-minute walk from the greenway. That of Planas to 15 minutes (you can also access this from the cemetery car park, at the entrance of Les Planes d'Hostoles). They are spectacular and all very well signposted. Enjoy them and a good refreshing bath!

4 On foot from the greenway and 15 min walk, there is also a cool excursion: the Castle d'Hostoles. You will find it well signposted.

5 Remember that you are Forbidden to take volcanic stones Let's try to respect this wonderful place so that we can all enjoy it for generations.

6 Santa Pau is not just a municipality of volcanoes and beech forests. Santa Pau is a beautiful medieval village, worthy of a full visit. Its castle, buildings and landscape will transport you to another era. Take a photo from your viewpoint and look at the landscape in front of you at the back of the castle. It will surprise you!

7 From the volcanoes parking, on the road, before reaching Santa Pau, you have them signposted. One is Santa Margarida with a Romanesque hermitage in its crater. The other, the Croscat, unique for its pit, since it had been a clay exploitation (with which tennis courts were made).

The Croscat will transport you to a lunar landscape full of different colors due to the oxidation of the lava. It was the last erupting volcano on the peninsula (11.000 years ago)! Both one and the other will be a great discovery.

8 You cannot leave Santa Pau, during this getaway to the Garrotxa by motorhome, without buying their "Fèssols de Santa Pau" with designation of origin.

A variety of beans with a great delicate flavor born from volcanic lands that make them unique. Let them soak for 12 hours and then simmer them for an hour and a quarter, scaring the water from time to time (pouring cold water). They will be delicious!

Stroll along the banks of the Brugent river in Sant Feliu de Pallarols enjoying its scenery and make your geocoaching circuit with the kids, they will love it! You have the information panel for the geocoaching circuit in the parking lot of the old Sant Feliu train station.

2 We propose you, during this getaway to the Garrotxa by motorhome, do the ruta of Sant Feliu de Pallarols a les Planes d'Hostoles by bike or walking on the green Way of the Carrilet.

It is a very suitable route for children. The round trip is 12 km, which with different stops along the way to bathe in the river or gorgas become bearable for a child from about 5 years old.

We do not recommend the route for children under 5 years old, unless they do not go in a seat or in a cart or connected stick pulled by an adult. What we do with Anna, who is 3 years old, is to take her bike for a while and when she gets tired, tie her with a padlock somewhere and then take her in the cart.

For us, the best is undoubtedly the cart dragged by a bike, where apart from carrying the little ones safely, it can be used to carry backpacks, etc.

3 La best gorga for the little ones is that of the Poetí. Gorga in which you must not deviate or walk from the greenway of Carrilet, if you do the previous route. It is also a not very deep gorga (although caution with the little ones that will not arrive!) And that with patience you can see otters.

4 From Santa Pau, you can visit the Fageda d'en Jordà. A very magical beech forest, born from a cooled lava flow from the Croscat.

A beautiful place to walk, where you can go in Horse carriage (€ 9 the adult or 7 children), where you can visit the La Fageda cooperative, where people with disabilities make dairy products with great care or where you can go to the farmhouse that gives it its name and which is now a botanical conservation center. Any of these activities will delight children.

1 Add cream moisturizer in the legs of your furry if he is going to do the bicycle route with you, he will avoid burning them on the pieces of asphalt that there are.

Remember to put in the collar of your dog with permanent his name and you phone, you never know if you can escape in an oversight and even if it has a chip the system between ANICOM and AIAC of data exchange does not work (I know from experience).

No no prohibited dogs in the gorgas or river, so you will enjoy it beautifully.

Although your dog is sociable and good, remember that another dog may not be so or that there may be people and children who are scared of him. Take it tied at all times.

1 The starting point of this Garrotxa getaway by motorhome that we propose, is the old train station of Sant Feliu de Pallarols. There you can park and stay on foot on the greenway Carrilet with your camper or motorhome.

There are 24-hour bathrooms, a very nice bar where there is also the tourist information point and behind you will find the river, with the odd area to soak in.

2 In the pmotorhome parking at the entrance of Santa Pau, where we suggest you spend the night, there are picnic tables and garbage, but there is no other service. From there to the old town there are only 5 minutes. And in 2 minutes you have a bakery among other little shops.

3 Sleep in the Fageda d'en Jordà car park or in the one of the volcanoes it has a main drawback: the noise of the road. Go to the one at the entrance of the town, your rest will be guaranteed.

4 In high season both the Fageda and the volcanoes parking are paid out.

Story of the getaway to La Garrotxa by motorhome or camper

Day 1: Arrival and visit to Sant Feliu de Pallerols

It is 16:30 p.m. when we pick up the children from school and head towards Sant Feliu de Pallerols.

In just under an hour we have reached our initial destination to This getaway to the Garrotxa by motorhome that we have planned.

We park in the parking lot of the old train station, where we find a bar and the tourist information office, as well as bathrooms that will be open 24 hours.

The greenway of the carrilet passes right in front and not far away we can see as neighbors a sausage factory, the river with a beautiful promenade, forest and the town.

We decided to go out to visit the town. We stroll through alleys around its river and discover its legend of the «Pescallunes» (fishfinders).

The people of the municipality are called pescallunes because of that legend where a fisherman tried to fish the moon.

It is a charming little town, it surprises us enormously.

Our children love the walk around the river where they observe tents and ducks. The depth is not very high and the water is crystal clear, it makes you want to bathe. Too bad it's late and it's cold!

After the ride we go to the motorhome, have dinner and go to bed early.

Day 2: Cycle route through Carrilet, gorgas and Santa Pau

It is around 10 am when the whole family leaves with the bikes towards Les Planes d'Hostoles.

Arnau takes his bike, he is 6 years old and we already know that 12 km will do them good.

Anna, 3 years old, but we know it will complicate things. She wants to go with her bicycle, with which she goes with wheels.

We take the car with us being foresight that sooner rather than later he will tire of his bike and will prefer the cart.

A great success. At the exit of Sant Feliu she is already tired, and in a small park that there is we tie her bike to a lamppost.

We keep going, and as the path is down (although very slight) it is done in a moment.

We cross beautiful landscapes, with views of volcanoes and the Castillo d'Hostoles. Between bridges and tunnels the tour is entertaining.

When we have already gone about 4 km, the signs to the gorg of Les Planes begin to appear and then to the Molí d'en Murris and the Castillo d'Hostoles.

Finally, the Gord del Poetí appears, just at the entrance to Les Planes d'Hostoles.

At the entrance to Les Planes d'Hostoles we decided to go to the center of the town to buy something to eat and rest a bit in a playground.

It is 12 o'clock when we are already returning. This time during the turn (uphill, although with a slight difference in height) we will hire making stops for the kids to rest.

The first stop: the gorg del Poetí. The second stop by the river to eat, where there is a picnic table and we are already very close to Sant Feliu de Pallerols. And the third, to collect Anna's bike.

It is 15 pm when we arrive at the motorhome. It was an easy day, without problems, very pleasant, sunny but with shade and water.

After making coffee in the station bar and resting a bit, we decided to leave for Santa Pau.

In 20 minutes, we have reached the parking at the entrance to Santa Pau, which is full of vans and motorhomes.

They do a craft product fair and it shows that it has attracted many colleagues.

We enjoy Santa Pau, a beautiful medieval town, its fair and its little shops. And after making the purchase of the "fèssols de Santa Pau" and a "llonganissa" among others, we go to the motorhome to rest from the day.

Day 3: Croscat volcano and Fageda d'en Jordà

After a good breakfast we leave for the parking of the volcanoes.

Currently it is free, while we are in April, but in high season you must pay about € 4.

We decided to make the route to the Croscat volcano, which we know will not leave children indifferent due to its colorful landscape, where the moon looks like. The route is short and very affordable for Anna, who is 3 years old.

In half an hour we reach the information point for the volcanic area, just before the volcano pit area.

There is a small exhibition that helps us all understand the history of Croscat, an old clay farm with which tennis courts were made.

And after a good investigation and discovered in the terrain of the Croscat clay, we undo the way to return to the motorhome.

There, we will eat and rest for a while before going to the Fageda d'en Jordà, where we will finish the day on Sunday.

A day of spectacular landscapes and unusual discoveries that we are looking forward to seeing again soon.

Already around 18 pm we leave for Sant Pere de Vilamajor. Coming home to pack backpacks and next week.
